They say that there is nothing sexier than borrowing your boyfriend’s button down shirt. Now you can borrow his jeans too—well loosely speaking anyway.
This denim fad is too good to pass up. I love playing with proportion, and this jean offers up the perfect opportunity to do just that. It’s also a nice break from the ultra form fitting pants that have been spewed out by designers for the past couple of years. Not to say you should think of these as a replacement for your skinnies—more of an option, and a girl needs options.
So let’s explore some of our options when it comes to boyfriend jeans.
Masculine Approach
We are heavily borrowing from the boys in these looks. The top left look couldn’t be more appropriate for heading into summer. The carpenter jeans add a different perspective on this trend. And a loose basic white shirt could very well have been snagged from your boyfriend’s gym bag. Minimal, nude sandals and a single long necklace are the dainty touches this otherwise masculine look calls for. You can also pile on the layers. Oversized, lightweight pieces give you a very downtown cool vibe. And pairing them with some heeled booties adds the slightest bit of structure. If you want a look that’s not so casual, you can look for a structured menswear-inspired blazer and some androgynous brogues to pair with your slouchy jeans.
The Feminine Approach
And if you are not ready to abandon all of your feminine ways, be inspired by these three ladies. A loose and tattered pair of denim are made sophisticated when paired with a short boxy fur. Try your oversized denim with an animal print and fitted leather jacket for your next blind date. It’s sexy and stylish, without trying too hard. And if you need a more business-appropriate look, swap your trousers for relaxed denim. This look is kicked up a few notches with strappy heeled sandals, a crisp white blazer, structured black purse and scarf wrapped around the neck.
The Chic Approach
Lastly, but certainly not least, you can always look to Chictopia for a limitless supply of inspiration. Our own Katrina, is getting some serious style points by pairing her high-waisted vintage jeans, turned boyfriend with a very current striped sweater and red belt. Comeovertothedarksid rocks hers with classic pumps, a fitted blazer and a slouchy half-tuck tee. Stylepantry wears hers with beige mule wedges and a cropped, destroyed tee.
If you still feel at a loss for how to wear this look, then here’s Boyfriend Jeans Made Simple in 5 steps:
1 Fit is King (or Queen)—your jeans should fit at the widest part of the hip and they fall straight from there. If you don’t somehow accentuate your hips, you will lose your entire shape in this trend.
2 Just Cuff It—The length is best countered by cuffing the hem. This allows you to really show off your shoe also!
3 Holes are Good—A little scuff gives authenticity to the jeans being an item you stole from someone else’s closet.
4 Height Not Necessary—You don’t need to be supermodel tall or thin to work this style. Remember it’s all about fit (see rule number 1), not your body type.
5 Keep it Tucked—The baggy nature of these pants lends itself much better to a tuck, or half tuck. You run the risk of your shirt pooching out if you leave it over the jeans. That also means, these jeans are an excellent opportunity to pull out this season’s cropped top.
And there you have it! You should now be ready to trade out your skinnies (at least for a day or two) and showcase your brave new look!
