As much as we’d all love to spend our day playing Farmville or browsing Chictopia (the latter is a much better choice, I might add), sometimes it’s important to take a break from the internet and kick back with some old-fashioned paper literature. The merits of reading are endless, and our editors know it! Whether it’s Catcher in the Rye or just the latest issue of Elle, find out what inspires us here at Everybody Is Ugly.
What We’ve Read: Old Favorites
Annebeth is a fan Nabokov’s Lolita, as well as the authors John Steinbeck and Tennessee Williams. She enjoys their work because “they pair captivating characters, and gorgeous writing style in stories that will stay with you.”
angiekje raves about Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. “It’s a book that will take you away to the most romantic place on earth. You will be able to dream, feel and experience what ‘Sayuri’ (the main character) feels.”
fashionjuice is a proud owner of the entire Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. Of course these books are perfect for girls who love fashion and shopping! She also recommends the latest issue of W Magazine with a feature of actress Mia Wasikowska.
purplewang “treasures fairy tales with adult undertones,” such as Alice’s Adventures and Peter Pan (KaitlynRickson is also a fan). Her top pick: The Win-Up Bird Chronicle. These books “have a sense of mystery and make you think a lot, [even though] the plot generally goes nowhere.”
MissMissy is partial to tales of restless spirits, and so loves On the Road by Jack Kerouac and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. As for magazines, “Vogue has a way of making any topic enchanting.”
Catherinee enjoys Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut—“it’s satirical and funny to the point where [she] actually laughs while reading.” Another favorite is Bust magazine, a feminist publication which combines art, food, fashion, and thought-provoking writing.
KaitlynRickson is a fan of the book Thumbsucker, and feels like she relates to the main character. She also likes Nylon and Wonderland magazine, because they “offer a unique display of fashion,” and don’t “just water down style to fit the norm.”
Stylish twosome irisanddaniel both name The Perks of Being a Wallflower as a favorite book. Iris (along with editor MissMissy) also loves Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, and picked up Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter because of her love for our 16th president. Daniel favors the graphic style and overall presentation of Elle Magazine, and is fascinated by tales of Disney history read about in The Art of Walt Disney.
naomayyy loves the Harry Potter Series, “as any teen might” (myself included!), and likes how she can just “pick up any of the books anytime, and still be immersed and enthralled with the world of Harry Potter.”
