The Olsenboye City Girl contest held a few months ago on Chictopia had so many contestants showing us their chic street style outfits inspired by their favorite cities, but Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen personally picked Chictopian cayleem of If You Seek Style as the lucky first place winner, whose winning look was inspired by Stockholm, Sweden (even though the girl is from Indianapolis!). Caylee won an all-expense paid trip to LA to model as the face of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s Olsenboye Spring 2011 collection next to other young fashion bloggers and did a webisode series in beautiful and sunny Venice Beach!
We got to interview Caylee on her once in a lifetime experience, and this is what she had to say.
How would you describe your style? Who are your fashion influences and what are your inspirations?
I’d say my style is simple and chic with an edge. I also like to add some feminine, tomboy, vintage, or bohemian touches based on my mood. My main fashion influences include model-off-duty style, Swedish style bloggers Elin Kling and Caroline Blomst (I absolutely love them), and my three favorite Kates: Kate Lanphear, Kate Moss, and Kate Bosworth. As for inspiration, Lucky Mag, Elle, and Nylon are all magazines that I devour each month, but I really get most of my inspiration from the internet. It is a great medium that has brought fashion from all over the world – lookbooks, editorials, street style, runway shows, etc. – into one accessible place. Designers Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Isabel Marant, Chloe, Acne, and Rag & Bone also provide a lot of inspiration for my wardrobe.
What was it like when you found out that you won the contest and that Mary-Kate and Ashley picked you?
I was so excited when I got the message from Cheri saying that I won the Olsenboye City Girl Contest. It is definitely the biggest and coolest thing I’ve ever won. Then it hit me that yes, Mary-Kate and Ashley personally chose me – I couldn’t believe it! I’m very humbled and honored that they picked me, a random girl from middle America.
How would you describe your experience in LA? What were your favorite moments?
In one word: memorable. I’d never been to LA, I’d never done any sort of modelling before, and I got to work in the most gorgeous weather on the beach with amazing people. My favorite moments were walking up and down Melrose Avenue shopping and sipping hot chocolate; meeting up for burgers with fellow Chictopian Elora Joshi at the Roosevelt Hotel; shooting the campaign from sunset to sundown on Venice Beach; and grabbing pizza and gelato with fellow Chictopians Natalie and Dylana Suarez after in Santa Monica.
What was it like modeling for Olsenboye?
So much fun that it didn’t even feel like work! I feel incredibly lucky that I got to work with such an amazing cast and crew. The campaign is meant to be like a day in our actual lives; I got to act like I was blogging, shooting outfit photos, etc., so it was quite easy and very laid-back. I do wish that hanging out on Venice Beach like we had to in the videos were part of my day-to-day life though… :)
What was it like modeling with the other bloggers/models?
That was really the best part of the whole thing – we instantly clicked and it was like we had been friends forever, so when you see us “acting” like five best friends having a great day at the beach in the video, it was like we really were! I was actually really intimidated at first because all of them are models or had done previous campaign shoots – I was so clueless and nervous! But they were great; they made me feel really comfortable in front of the camera and I loosened up and had a blast with them.
Obviously blogging gives many like yourself reach to a wide audience, the chance to make friends with others with similar passions, and amazing opportunities like Olsenboye. How do you feel blogging is affecting fashion and the world overall?
Blogging has given a voice to everyday guys and gals all over the world who are interested in fashion. People are connecting to bloggers because they have style, whether live normal lives and have a real budget, or have exciting lives and a limitless budget! Now designers, companies, magazines, etc., have to pay attention to what bloggers say and do because they are the new influencers.
Do you think you’ll be blogging forever? Is it a hobby or a career?
I do not think I’ll be blogging forever, but I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! And this is definitely just a hobby. I blog because it’s fun to connect with others who share the same interests, to make friends, to inspire others, and to document my style in a diary-like fashion, but there are many weeks when I can’t find the time to update, because other things like my career will always come first.
Did you get to keep any of the Olsenboye clothes? Any favorites?
Thanks Caylee for the interview and congrats again on winning the contest!
