A good friend of mine told me about how dangerous it is to reach success when you’re young. The majority of child stars turn out to be a mess. Perhaps it’s because they accomplished great things at such a young age. They have nowhere else to go. They don’t know what else they need to do in life.
While some teens are getting pregnant and/or spreading their naughty pictures on the net, it is refreshing to see there are some sane and talented (and famous) ones. Let’s talk about them!
1. ELLE FANNING
When she first came to the scene, she was always paired with her older sister, Dakota Fanning. A lot of people said Elle was prettier than Dakota. Elle was born on April 9, 1998 in Georgia. The most recent thing on Elle’s resume is her gig in Somewhere by Sofia Coppola. It’s hard to compete with her sister; Dakota has I Am Sam, Charlotte’s Web, The Twilight Saga, The Runaways, and more on her resume. Let’s see if Elle can prove to the world that she’s not just “Dakota’s little sister!”
STYLE REPORT: Elle is a true girly girl. She loves smiling, wearing jewel tone short dresses with bows or floral prints. Elle seems to have a soft spot for plaids and clear-frame glasses.
QUICK TIPS: If you are a girly girl, like Elle, always make sure you don’t look too ‘junior’ or too Disney. Shy away from bright pink or Hannah Montana T shirts. Pair a colorful skirt with a jewel tone or white shirt. My favorite element about Elle is her shoes. She loves wearing menswear shoes or boots. It’s fun to see the juxtaposition of feminine outfits with masculine footwear.
2. ELIZABETH OLSEN
It’s uncanny how much Elizabeth Olsen looks like the third twin of The Olsen Twins. She was born on February 16, 1989. With leading roles in two movies (Silent House and Martha Marcy May Marlene), it’s hard not to notice Elizabeth, or Lizzie. The question is does she get notice because of the twins or because of her talent? She’s credited as “the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen” more often than “an American actress.” I like Elizabeth Olsen. I think she looks like the twins but with a sprinkle of Maggie Gyllenhaal put in the mixture.
STYLE REPORT: Elizabeth loves simple clothes, simple silhouettes, and simple colors. She’s not trying too hard and it shows. I like to call this style as the American sportswear (think about Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Donna Karan, etc.) She hasn’t yet come up with her own personal style but being a style icon probably is not her aspiration.
QUICK TIPS: When you want to dress simplistic, put at least one element that makes you pop and not blending in too much. It can be anything from red lips or a brooch.
3. HAILEE STEINFELD
Hailee has it easier than the two above. She doesn’t have any famous siblings. But since we’re talking about young stars, it’s hard not to include Hailee Steinfeld. She was born on December 11, 1996 It is safe to say that she, out of all the teen stars of the moment, is the only one that is taken seriously by the fashion industry. This California girl was on the front row at the Miu Miu Fall 2011 show. She’s definitely the one to watch. Oh, and did you know she’s a quarter Filipino?
STYLE REPORT: Hailee is the Miu Miu girl of this era (and Carey Mulligan is the Prada girl.) Needles to say she’s a girl who’s not afraid to take risks in playing fashion. A lot of looks from Miuccia Prada is very elaborate. Not everyone can be the Miu Miu or Prada girl.
QUICK TIPS: Well, if you’re wealthy enough, buy Miu Miu dresses. If not, spice up your wardrobe with some of Miuccia Prada’s favorite style elements: stripes, colors, bold graphics, animal print (no, not leopard print but more like swallow print, swan print or cat print!) and to not look over-the-top madness, pair your wild outfits with simple hair, simple makeup and simple shoes. Cause some clothes really speak for themselves.
I think the key to stay sane, for these teen stars, is to treat fame and the entertainment industry as a business. It is not just a fun trip and they have to think about their futures too. Who are your favorites?
