Montmartre has always been its own city. Paris just happened to grow into it, and even when it did, the residents had no more desire to become Parisian than Parisians wanted to share their city with the Montmartrois. Montmartre is an artists’ haven; its sloping hill and romantic cobbles could inspire even the most mediocre mind… but in spite of all the history, and the tourists it brings, the neighbourhood remains poor and isolated from the pristine glitz for which Paris is known. Personally, I still think its beautiful.
