From the good to the bad—to the downright bizarre, Lady Gaga is a master of crowd-wowing style. A celebrated icon, Gaga has made a name for herself through her fresh dance pop sound, and almost as important, her unique fashion sense.
She’s been everywhere lately…well, at least more than usual. With the release of the video for her new single, Born This Way, and a modeling/performance gig at the Thierry Mulger fashion show, Gaga is taking the world by storm. Lady Gaga’s style is constantly evolving, but her fashion sense has taken a sharp turn recently. Apparently, it’s a turn for the better—Gaga claims that the release of her single marks the beginning of a new era.
One of Gaga’s most obvious changes is her new bone structure, as seen on the cover of her new album. Pointed browbone, cheekbone, and shoulder prosthetics pay tribute to her late friend Alexander McQueen (a style seen in one of his final collections, Spring/Summer 2010).
The music video for Born This Way is also full of cultural symbolism. A quote from a 1920s expressionist film (Metropolis, 1927), pope-hat shaped hair, an image of a painting by surrealist painter Salvador Dali…there are many elements that remain up to extensive interpretation. More apparent references include again, Gaga’s new bone structure, and her tributes to Madonna (the overall sound of the song, meaning, and a gap-toothed image of Gaga at the end) and Michael Jackson (Gaga dances wearing white fringed gloves).
Her overall message—only strengthened by her unique fashion choices—love yourself, love others, equality for all….you’re on the right track baby, ’cause you were Born This Way!
Gaga + Thierry Mulger
As you all (hopefully!) know, it’s Fashion Week in Paris, and this year, Lady Gaga stole the show at Thierry Mulger. Prancing down the catwalk to the beat of another new single, Government Hooker, Gaga was the pretty much the only model who didn’t trip on her sky-high platforms. Following her lead, the rest of the models walked the maze-like runway in looks that screamed Gaga. Sheers, leather, and latex…a Little Monster’s dream wardrobe for Fall/WInter 2011.
See pictures and watch clips from the show on the Thierry Mulger Facebook page.
As Seen On Chictopia
Daniel of irisanddaniel wore a bandana on his shoulder a la Gaga, while AndyNahle and lissakahayon pay more obvious tribute to the Mother Monster in concert-style tees.
HawaiiKidd and whitneywhitney are proud wearers of Gaga-eque sunglasses.
Go Gaga – Get the Look
Try your hand at DIY with an inspired Born This Way unicorn jacket, or take the easy route with faux-leather fingerless motorcycle gloves. Gaga’s safe-love campaign with Cyndi Lauper and M.A.C. cosmetics has resulted in the production of a beautiful pink lipcolor, Viva Glam Gaga, and she even has her own line of Heartbeat headphones by Beats by Dr. Dre. With so many ways to get the Gaga look, it’s time to get started, Little Monsters. A fashion evolution is upon us.-——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
