Over 200 countries tune into their telly just to watch the most prominent award ceremony, the Oscars. Yes, recognizing the film industry is pretty important, but in the fashion world, we’re more focused on what the celebrities are wearing for the red carpet! On a glamorous occasion like the Oscars I expected our fab gals dressed in glamorous trailing hemlines like Halle Berry (by Manchesa), Jennifer Hudson (Versace), and Hilary Swank (Gucci Première). Surprisingly enough, the real winners kept it rather simple, dazzling the red carpet in formfitting silhouettes and minimal jewelry.
Let’s recap on some of our favorites (and not so favorites) that showcased in last night’s 83rd Academy Awards red carpet event!
________The Fably Dressed: Purple Plums________
Nominees for Fab Dressed: Purple Plums
- Natalie Portman
- Mila Kunis
- Scarlett Johansson
Purple is one of the it colours for this upcoming fall, and not surprisingly, we saw the trend show up before it hit the masses. While some criticized Best Actress winner, Natalie Portman for playing it safe last night, she actually looked appropriately elegant in a plum Rodarte draped gown and matching Tiffany’s tassle earrings. Considering that she’s pregnant, Rodarte ‘s dress was able to make her baby bump look seamlessly slimming! Her “Black Swan” co-star, Mila Kunis, didn’t get nominated for an award last night, but she stunned the audience by staying away from her usual darks and wore a lavender layered laced Elie Saab gown and simple updo. Out of the three, Scarlett Johansson stood out with her va-va-voom figure by wearing a lacy (and racy!) magenta number by Dolce and Gabbana and wavy locks.
Chictopian Best Dressed Award: This award (and love) goes to Natalie Portman and her growing baby! This Rodarte dress made her figure flattering with an added hint of sexiness – fitting for a future hot mama.
_____The Fably Dressed: Cream of the Crop______
Nominees for Fab Dressed: Neutral Nudes
- Mandy Moore
- Cate Blanchett
- Michelle Williams
Another colour trend that was featured last night was neutral nudes. Mandy Moore surprised the audience in a nude coloured Monique Lhuillier gown. The sparkly number seemed to match her skin tone wonderfully as she complemented her gown with diamond button earrings and a bright, coral lipstick. Next in line is the amazing Cate Blanchett, where she was seen wearing a creamy lavender structured embellished gown by Givenchy. If Cate were to show up jewelry-less, this gown would surely compensate that since it seemed to sparkle well with those popping details. Speaking of sparkles, “Blue Valentine” Best Actress nominee, Michelle Williams, decided to go classic with a cream short-sleeved embellished Chanel gown and pixie haircut (possibly thanks to Squarectomy?).
Chictopian Best Dressed Award: Hands down, Cate Blanchett, deserves this recognition. She always is fashion-forward on the red carpet but we have never seen glammed up like this (she actually looks more dewy and glowing than her nominees)!
______The Fably Dressed: Masculine Affair_______
Nominees for Fab Dressed: Masculine Affair
- Russell Brand
- Robert Downey Jr.
- Jesse Eisenberg
During the Oscars, we get so caught up in seeing the fabulous ladies, we forget to pay tribute to their sexy dates! Often times, Russell Brand stands out during red carpet events for his wacky attire, but he really pulled it off nicely last night with this checkered shirt and navy blue tux. However, that didn’t mean it would compromise his oily locks from featuring. Another actor who also kept his natural locks into place was Best Actor nominee for “The Social Network,” Jesse Eisenberg. Jesse kept it classic by wearing a black tuxedo by Band of Outsiders and matching neck tie. When it comes to Robert Downey Jr., we may have to applaud twice for the 45-year-old actor – one for rocking the white tie and navy tuxedo and two for keeping it seriously sexy!
Chictopian Best Dressed Award: Yup, this award goes to leading “Iron Man,” Robert Downey Jr. He’s definitely come a long way from his troubled past, and here’s third applaud for you, Mrs. Downey!
_______The Badly Dressed: Female Edition________
Nominees for Badly Dressed: Female Edition
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Penelope Cruz
- Gwyneth Paltrow
What are these bombshells doing in this section? Even though a lot of celebrities didn’t opt for the Hollywood glam, it seemed like these leading ladies missed the mark by dressing too minimalistic. Underrated “Winter’s Bone” Best Actress nominee, Jennifer Lawrence definitely got a lot of buzz for wearing this formfitting red maxi-like Calvin Klein dress. Considering it is the Oscars, I expected a bit more pizazz from her look, possibly a slit on the dress or additional jewelry could complement the bold hue. On the other hand, Penelope Cruz‘s L*Wren Scott gown was gorgeously adorned and was packed with a great red hue. However, the gown didn’t quite fit her – literally. Even though Penelope had a baby just a few weeks ago, she could opt for a higher neckline gown to enhance her (ahem) chest area. Lastly, this previous Academy Award winner, Gwyneth Paltrow, looked fresh with her platinum blonde straightened hair. However, her gleaming box-like Calvin Klein gown didn’t do wonders for this beautiful star. In fact, this structured dress made Gwyneth look more like a box than the beautiful star that she is.
Chictopian Worst Dressed Award: Think of this as a Razzie Award except in the world of Chictopia! Penelope Cruz snagged this award for being a bit too sexy on the red carpet last night.
We’re hoping they and additional Chictopians can cover the future Oscars for Chictopia!
So, Chictopians, which ones were your favorites (and least favorites) of the night?
