No doubt you’ve all noticed this recent promulgation of opulent accessories, over-the-top aesthetics and in-your-face separates. And while we love looking like rock-stars six out of seven days in a week, there’s always that one day when you’re too dead-brained to think about what you’re throwing on.
The answer? Go back to basics!
Our contest this month is the perfect opportunity to start thinking about what makes up the foundations in your wardrobe. Whether it’s a pair of battered brown boots you’ve had since middle school, or a simple button-down white shirt, basics provide a familiar blank canvas that are easy things to put on when your creative juices are on the fritz. And since they are so simple, a few well placed of-the-moment accessories and touches will carry your look into any seasonal trend and make you look like you put way more thought into your outfits.
Here are five must-have basics for any wardrobe:
The White T-Shirt: Whether it’s a burnout, a v-neck, something fitted or something baggy, a versatile white t-shirt is the basic building block for any wardrobe. Use it to tone down an over-the-top jacket, or tuck it into a pair of trendy pants.
The Black Tank Top: Make sure your tank top has thinner straps and a more feminine cut so you can pair them with masculine cutoffs or a high-waisted skirt.
The Gray Cardigan: The perfect thing for romping around the house or throwing over chilly shoulders, the grey cardigan should something unfussy and made of a luxe material.
The Dark Wash Jean: A darker jean will instantly elongate your legs and add a bit of polish to an otherwise informal pant. Slimmer fits and made-to-tailor lengths are key.
The LBD: While each season brings new black dresses in exotic shapes, a simple sheath in a timeless cut will outlast trends.
