NICOLE MILLER FALL/WINTER 2011
by Hope Adela Pasztor
While viewing the Fall/Winter 2011 Nicole Miller collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this season, one word surfaced to my mind: supergirl. Self-described as “angles over curves with a menswear influence” with “quadrilaterals and triangles digitally printed on new surfaces”, the collection evokes the wardrobe of a futuristic Gotham City-era superhero fashionista. Clean cut, with natural, no-fuss makeup and silkily smoothed tresses, the lineup of elegant and diverse models (from fair skinned redheads to exotic African-American beauties) projected a look that was svelte and attractive, ready for a night of dangerous heroic acts and adrenaline pumping car chases.
The show began with an array of black and gray geometric-print sheath dresses, layered over brilliant coral and ocean-blue long sleeved tops or accented with triangular shapes in corresponding hues. Sharpness increasing with each new ensemble, the clothing transitioned to a more cutting edge style composed of heavy black material in slightly variating textures and textile makeup. Fitted black tops, often with dramatic sleeve cutaways, scooped backs, or one shoulder detailing, were teamed with sleek trousers, liquid leather leggings and business friendly black leather pencil skirts. Chunky belted angular cardigans, glamorous elbow length leather gloves, and patent leather spike heel ankle boots completed the look. (My personal favorite outfit of the show was a daring, almost Dracula-esque one shoulder dress with a flowing Batman ready square cut sleeve.) As a finishing touch, Nicole Miller added more futuristic pieces towards the end of her collection in metallic silver materials in the form of mercury-like high waisted pencil skirts and stretchy liquid dresses.
Girly girly or tough downtown chick, we could all use a little bit of Nicole Miller’s Fall/Winter 2011 supergirl edge in our wardrobes. If your style is more feminine and romantic, pair one of these sleek pieces with your favorite floral skirt and hair bow for a chic style contrast. If you love to walk on the wild side, then why not purchase several of these striking pieces? Either way, when you don something from this collection, you’ll definitely experience a stimulating rush of fashion superpowers.
