Where did you get your eye for fashion distinct? Fashion certainly does not run in my family. I have always been involved with different artistic outlets, so fashion came natural to me. My style has evolved over time, as I’ve been inspired by other fashionable individuals.
When did you start blogging about fashion? I started my blog a little over a year ago. It started as a way to record the evolution of my style, but has slowly grown into much more. I would love to do more with my blog, such as more inspirational posts and personal entries. However, it’s so hard to find the time! Hopefully one day my blog will be renowned for menswear inspiration and will inspire other males to dress their best!
You have such great bone-structure, are you a model or are you aspiring to become a model at some part of your life? Heh, well you’re too kind. I am not a model, but it’s something that I may consider pursuing in the future. That is, if I am able to combat my self esteem.
*You just made me and many other readers smile… You are a photographer, so I assume you take your own pictures? Many of the photos you see of me are not self portraits. The vast majority of my outfit posts are taken by my best friend (who happens to be a photographer as well), Erika. Now and again I’ll do self portraits in my bedroom, but most of the credit goes to her. You can view my photography here or on my flickr. For those that wish to dive deeper into photography, I suggest shooting as often as possible. Experiment with different settings and locations. You’ll find yourself learning a lot about lighting, angles, and composition this way. If you own a dSLR, upgrade your lens to something with a greater depth of field than the standard lens that your camera came equipped with. 50mm f/1.8 lenses are great and relatively affordable.
What is the favourite garment you have in your wardrobe? My leather biker jacket. It’s so versatile.
You are one of the newest Chictopian style icons. Were you planning on becoming one this quickly? I never imagined I would become a style icon as fast as I did! I am beyond flattered.
How would you describe your own personality? I’m a very artistic individual. Slightly sarcastic, and sometimes too witty. But above all, I’m very caring. I’m humbled by my past and find other people’s tragedies very relatable. For that reason, I’m never quick to judge. I try to be very open-minded.
What defines your signature look? My signature look includes skinny jeans, a button up shirt, classic vest, bow tie, and specs. I always try to keep a good balance by adding a leather jacket and/or military boots. A classic gentleman, yet refined with a modern touch.
I’ve never seen anyone work short hair the way you do. What is the story behind the hair? My hair never used to be this length! In fact, it wasn’t until this winter that I decided to wear it this short. I spent the majority of my life with medium/long hair, and grew tired of dealing with it. Short hair is easier, and much more masculine if you ask me.
Do you share your interest in fashion with your friends? Not all of my friends share my interest for fashion. In fact, only 2 or 3 do. Of course, all of my friend’s respect my style. If they didn’t, why would I be their friend?
Who is your favourite fashion blogger and why? My favorite fashion blogger has to be Pascal Grobb. While he is very cutting edge with trends, his style remains effortlessly classic. I respect that. Apart from Pascal, it’s fair to say I have a huge crush (or obsession?) over Keiko’s blog.
Why do you think most guys aren’t into fashion? Most guys aren’t in to fashion because they are simply lazy. For many people, it’s easy to throw on something simple; such as sweatpants and a t-shirt. For me, I cannot fathom leaving my house dressed that way. How I dress directly effects my self esteem. With that, I must dress well to have confidence (and confidence is very important!).
Where do you turn to for fashion inspiration? I turn to the internet! Chictopia, for example. Apart from the internet, I draw a lot of inspiration from gentleman of different decades. The thought of dressing like a gentleman is what inspires me to dress the way I do.
Your blog is called Authentic style apprehension. How did you come up with that name? It’s more of a definition than anything. It was inspired by how I view my style, as well as how I think other’s should view theirs. Your style should be authentically you. It’s just a matter of understanding what YOU like and what looks good on YOU. Authentic style apprehension = Understanding your personal style.
I truly love the lay-out of your blog. Very Less is more, how did you come up with it? I designed my layout with the intention of emphasizing my pictures. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? My outfits should speak for themselves, and it’s interesting to see how other people interpret them with as little as I type.
So true. What distincts Chictopia from other Fashion related websites? The community on Chictopia is insanely good. I am so impressed with how many people take time to comment on others outfits, offering their opinions on what they specifically like within the look. Apart from that, I really love the diversity that is prevalent throughout the site. If only we could get more guys to join!
I agree with that. Thank you so much for this interview Blake!! I think you’ll get wherever you’d like to be in no time!! Thank you Chictopians for all your support and for reading my article!!
