“I’m confident enough in what I do that people will see me for who I am.” – DEV
__________WHO IS DEV?___________
Born Devin Star Tailes, this Cali-born gal is known by just one word, “Dev.” Unlike many pop stars with one-worded names (think Madonna, Pink, Ke$ha), Dev is keeps it real by running her own Myspace and blog. She was first discovered by producers/hip hop artists, The Cataracs (the guys who produced Far East Movement’s “Like a G-6”) when she sang an Amy Winehouse cover, a “diss-song” for her ex-boyfriend at the time. Who says that all breakups yield horrible results?
She started to gain even more success when she was featured in Far East Movement’s song and music video, “Like a G-6.” That was the first time mainstream media got a glimpse of Dev’s vocal talent and fashion style. Now, she is collaborating with The Cataracs to work on her first album. Her first official single, “Bass Down Low” is already being played in mainstream radio.
Already earning recognition from artists like FEM and Newboyz, we have a feeling that this tomboyish yet sexy singer will continue to stun the world with her talented voice and sense of style.
________BEHIND THE MUSIC_________
Behind those breathy vocals is this electrifying singer whose music can be defined as a hybrid of electric pop with hip hop. We can often see Dev’s sense of fashion reflect through her music and music videos, too.
Though we don’t see any booty bouncing in Dev’s second music video, “Booty Bounce,” what we do see is Dev’s sense of style. There are four Devs standing inside what seems like a warehouse. As the music progresses on, we see these four Devs dressed in electrifying androgynous outfits, and these outfits “change” (or rather are alternated) throughout the video. It’s remarkably entertaining to watch since we actually get to see more than 10 outfits (wow!) featured within a 3-minute music video. See what we mean by watching the video here.
Dev’s artistic presence continues to stun others, capturing the attention from the guys of Far East Movement. FEM actually sampled her song, “Booty Bounce” in their 2010 hit song, “Like a G-6.” Yes, those lyrics, “Poppin’ bottles in the ice, like a blizzard…Now I’m feelin so fly like a G6” was originally in Dev’s song!
________COP DEV’S STYLE_________
Dev is the epitome of what defines the style, androgyny. Frequently dressed in studded, strappy heels and slim-fitted hoodies, this makes her authentic style easily relate-able and amicable to the public. Her style can be categorized between glam rock and punk rock since she often shines in sparky embellished accessories, flamboyant colours, and that boyish, asymmetrical haircut.
For the music video, “Booty Bounce,” all of Dev’s punk-inspired outfits were provided by the urban, trendy label, Hellz Bellz (see image 2). However, to capture Dev’s essence, you don’t need to purchase or wear entirely the label. Here are some key signature items that can transform your current outfit into a"Dev-inspired" one easily.
* chained sunglasses
* skinny jeans/harem pants
* embellished tops (i.e., chains, accented shoulders,
* asymmetrical pieces that include geometric, coloured shapes
* tall pumps with ankle straps
* statement earrings
* printed leggings
* Black n Gold Glasses Chain ($38.00)
* Forever 21 Tribal-Printed Skirt ($15.80)
* Mod Cloth Asymmetrical Dress ($47.99)
* Bebe Feather and Chain Earrings ($24.00)
* Glaze Studded Pump ($23.53)
If you already have a boyish, asymmetrical haircut like Dev’s, then you already have part of the look down! While androgyny is usually associated with short hair, you can see that long haired gals can also play the part. Here are just a few of our Chictopians in outfits that can be easily seen as “Dev-inspired.”
Hopefully that this brief introduction will leave you wanting more from Dev and explore androgynous styles!
