Alexa Chung’s style is adored by the fashion world and it’s no secret why the twig-legged, ombre-dyed English fashion plate is getting loads of love. She’s got an irresistibly humorous personality and a penchant for modest styles worn in modern ways; let’s face the facts, the girl just has IT.
01. THE ALEXA FORMULA
Alexa’s look is a mixture of high fashion statements and affordable classics. She’s always seen strutting the street in styles by Chanel, Isabel Marant, and Proenza Schouler blended with stores like Topshop and H&M. She always looks put together without looking inaccessible, anyone can achieve her look.
Alexa draws inspiration from 60s style icons, classic rock musicians, schoolboys, little girl styles, and covers up with grandma-would-be-proud modesty. Pieces like overalls, girly blouses, and simple mini dresses are staples in an Alexa-inspired closet. The main idea is to use fashionably trendy pieces in a way that sort of de-values it; Alexa always looks like she just casually threw on her outfit, which is widely due to the loose outerwear she teams with her short silhouettes. An equal balance of masculinity and femininity is always present.
• THE HAIR
The disheveled style of Alexa Chung would be no where without her trademark ombre-dyed messy hair. Alexa has said before that she likes the look of unwashed hair with prim and proper outfits. The hair creates a feeling of relaxed ease and confidence in one’s style. Her hair varies from chin-length to collar bone grazing. Tip: Even when putting hair up, leave messy pieces down. Alexa doesn’t like showing her ears which helps in always keeping her messy look in tact.
• THE MAKEUP
If there’s one thing that Alexa is always perfect and clean on, it’s her face. She’s always got an impeccably-done cat eyeliner on and her clean and fresh face keeps her look modern and new. Pale lips (from nude to pinky coral shades) finish off the sixties inspired look that works well with all outfits. Alexa is known to sport a bold red for special occasions.
02. THE ALEXA CHRONICLES
Although Alexa is gaining momentum right now as a bona fide tastemaker for this fashion era’s young stylistas, she had her humble (yet still incredibly chic) beginnings in presenting for various British talk and news shows and festival street style photographs. Back in the day, Alexa’s style is still similar to how it is now but was much more invested in chic and simple everyday basics like striped shirts, parkas, and high-waisted skirts.
In 2009, her show on MTV, It’s On with Alexa Chung, garnered attention for her style on a daily basis; she wore short, pretty dresses in lace, denim shorts with casual shirts, lots of cigarette-leg jeans, and high platform shoes. Many of the fashion flock discovered her this year on Garance Dore’s blog (click here to see.)
Last year, Alexa’s added a bit more polish to the formula and added variety in the form of minimalist menswear inspired pieces and (dare we say) pulled back hair. Alexa has also experimented with couture pieces, new textures, and longer silhouettes. We can’t wait to see what Miss Chung has in store for us in 2011.
03. ALEXA CHUNG’S INDUSTRY INSPIRATIONS
Alexa has had such a large effect on the fashion industry in the past year, she’s become a muse for many a designer from high street to high couture. Kaiser Karl has taken a liking to her and dressed Alexa in Chanel for many events including the 2010 British Fashion Awards.
As many of you Chictopians already know, the Mulberry Alexa has taken the world by storm and was obviously inspired by our favorite leather-satchel toting girl. The bag is one of the most popular items from the Mulberry brand. And speaking of labels staring with the letter M, Alexa Chung’s collaboration with Madewell sold out extremely quickly a testament to her favored style among the style and fashion obsessed.
04. IT’S A CHUNG CHICTOPIA
Alexa’s influence not only encompasses the high fashion world but also the internet one, and Chictopia is not an exception. Her street style is famed across the world and it’s only fitting that our very own street-stylish style gallery inhabitants work looks that fit into her modestly modern formula.
