Cozy holiday sweaters knit by your mom are awesome and all, but while my feet are still huddled up in five pairs of socks, my mind is jetting off to exotic locations. Summer isn’t in our near future yet, but spring is beckoning us to come and check out her goods. Worried about having to renew your entire wardrobe? Fret not! Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your winter wear, keeping spring in your stylish mind!
Pile on the Pastel
Pastels are a spring staple, and they always feel like a breath of fresh air after months of wearing autumnal hues and greys and blacks. You might associate pastels purely with light cardigans and sweet sundresses, but you can easily adapt this trend to the chillier temperatures by going for pastel knits or pastel tights. Another tip: pastels look great with other pastels, so pile on the pastel, chictopians! Throw in a bit of your old winter whites or a soft light grey coat, and your transitional pastel is good to go! Those trendy camels from the past season look perfect with certain pastels too (try soft pink, baby blue, sorbet orange and seafoam green!), so no need to toss last season’s favorites out. Whatswithamy rocks this look to perfection, her outfit is keeping out the winter cold and inviting in sweet spring at the same time! caryslavilleinconnue shows us how to look lovely in all white with black trimmings, and Bluejeanbruises proves that soft pastels doesn’t necessarily equal saccharine sweet! Her casual layering with soft colors works perfectly.
I know, I know: we’re all ready to ditch the thick layers and chunky knits by now. We want to wear our cute jackets again, and it might be nice to show the world we still have a figure under all those layers of wool, but the temperatures aren’t quite cooperating. Solution? Smart layering! Go for thermal underwear, cashmere, two layers of tights (protip: nude tights provide much needed warmth under all your thinner/crochet/lace tights): anything slimfitting to create the illusion you aren’t packing on the layers at all. Wear something light, sheer and flowy over all your layers and you’ll look ready for spring! I had been eyeing TheStyleVoyager’s ASOS skirt for ages but ended up not buying it because it was quite pricey. Boy do I regret that now! CorksandCaftans’ beautiful maxi dress allows for maximum layering, you could even wear pants or wool leggings underneath and still look ready for spring!
Spring on Top, Winter on Legs
For those slightly warmer winter to spring days, the easiest solution is to wear anything you’d love to wear when spring REALLY arrives, but with a good pair of tights and a warm jacket. Light colored springdresses actually work really nicely with your trusty pair of black tights, and so will shorts. Yes, this tip is really just an excuse to be able to post this lovely look by Ashmarie, that dress is just so utterly dreamy and complimented perfectly by the edgy shoes and black tights. playingwithfire’s lace dress is just as dreamy and looks just as good with black tights or a good pair of boots! And did you know we lose like 50% of our bodily heat through our heads? Yes, that gorgeous floppy hat is a great way to stay warm and stylish too! This is really the easiest tip in the bunch, just mix and match your favorite spring and winterpieces and have some fun with it!
Bring on the Brights
One of the main trends for spring and summer 2011 has to be the neon brights! Nothing screams “I WANT WARM WEATHER NOW” like slathering yourself in bright colors. Feeling insecure about your lack of tan and afraid of being overpowered by the nuons? Pucker up and start your spring make over by putting on an eyecatching bright shade of lipstick! Sabath’s- gorgeous bright look landed in the style gallery in no time, and it isn’t hard to see why: that coat looks cozy warm, and the citrusy color almost makes you TASTE spring in the air. And what is better than one bright color? MORE BRIGHT COLORS! The blue nautical touch of the striped shirt just adds to the awesomeness. Want to add some brightness to your transitional outfit, and want to have the most impact for your buck? Buy bright tights! Lydia shows us how it’s done. Note that cute pink headband, the perfect little touch to take away from the christmassy vibe we usually get from red+white combos and push this look firmly into spring.
Freshen Up Your Knits
We can’t help it, we still love our knits. And it would be silly to throw these out before the cold weather forces us to let go of our gorgeous cardis, so here are some ways to evoke a spring feel without letting go of your cheesy holiday knitwear! CECEZ’ cardigan has a sort of holly/christmas decoration-esque print, but the look SCREAMS beachbabe summer to me. Think out of the box and wear your favorite knits with shorts, floral dresses or lace blouses. I get a warm and fuzzy feeling inside when I wear festive knits, so I won’t even feel the remnants of winter chill in the air! And I’m really sorry for linking yours truly, but I had a hard time finding looks to illustrate my point so I just went ahead and showed you guys myself! Floral and holiday knits can mesh perfectly, just try and keep the color scheme harmonious (or really whacked out, if that tickles your fancy). Color really is key here: don’t use green+red or too much black, but go for light or bright colors in combinations that seem to SCREAM for sunshine to put them in the spotlight.
If you play your cards right, you won’t need to toss anything out to make room for oodles of new stuff, because the style savvy chictopian knows how to work with what she’s got and still create a totally fresh look! :)
