I could not be happier about the 70’s making their way back into fashion. It was an era of pushing the envelope and making fashion statements—and I believe the 70’s helped create that foundation in fashion. The styles from the 70’s have been around for a while now but now more than ever they are flooding our trends. I’ve picked 4 items that are inspired by the era of the 70s that should make their way into your wardrobe if they haven’t already.
Prints: Prints never really go out of style but right now they are popping up everywhere. Not only are they popping up everywhere but they’re bold and bright with a wide range of colors and designs. Prints were a major staple of 70’s clothing whether it was the big flower prints on peoples’ walls or paisley on their bell bottoms. Winter Kate (Nicole Richie’s line) is a perfect example of being inspired by the 70’s. Her new Spring line is filled with big prints that are to die for!
The Maxi: Maxi skirt or maxi dress, either way…it’s back. The 60’s were all about mini EVERYTHING and the 70’s completely switched it on them for the long, bohemian look. Maxis were everywhere. In the 90’s they were around for a bit but they’ve definitely made their way back into fashion. I personally love myself a maxi skirt so I’m extremely happy about this. Asos has an awesome black maxi (listed above) as well as a sweater maxi dress. Our fellow Chictopians are rocking them hard as well and they look fab!
Fringe: There is nothing more iconic about the 70’s than suede fringe. It encompasses “hippie”. Fringe is also another trend that is back and stronger than ever but what I find interesting is it’s made its way back in other forms. You have sweaters with fringe made out of acrylic, fringe made out of fleece, and fringe made out of metal on necklaces. I think its brilliant to have expanded the fringe and even broadened it into accessories.
High Waisted: The high waisted look has been around for a few years now on shorts, skirts and pants but I feel like it’s still a substantial trend that is also broadening its horizons. Bell bottoms were out of the picture for a long time but they’re making their way back as a flare and with a high waist. I also listed some gorg Chictopians wearing wide leg, high waisted trousers which look great and encompass the 70’s as well. High waisted shorts and skirts seem like a summer essential and you can’t go wrong with them. This cute high waisted floral skirt from Forever21 is perfect for the upcoming spring season.
Other 70’s trends you can incorporate into your closet are flared jeans, although they are not bell bottoms they are definitely inspired by them. Headbands that go across your forehead are a fun addition to an outfit, lots of accessories i.e. bracelets, bangles, rings, and necklaces. Circle sunglasses are slowly making their way into the trends so if your bold you can get some of those. I recently got a pair from the Thread Show in LA and I’m obsessed. With the 70’s coming in strongly in 2011 we can build on what they started and create this unique style mixed with old and new.
