Only few people in the world have the ability to wear something only once. Most of us find it a waste of money and resources to wear something only once, plus it lacks creativity. It is safe to say that we all get to that point where we want to style our garments for multiple occasions.
It often takes an effort to come up with the perfect outfit for that fancy event and besides that a lot of us have a specific shopping budget that makes us want to get the most out of our garments. “The Multi-use Dress” features the scouting expedition on how to style one dress for four occasions… in this particular case a black maxi.
The challenge: to choose one dress that is perfect to style for multiple occasions.
The ingredients: one gorgeous gown, an enthusiastic Chictopian and some accessories.
The subject: WhitneyWhitney, one of latest Chictopian style icons. This Style Icon has a versatile, interesting style using modern elements in combination with warmer vintage pieces. Combining photographic qualities with the knowledge of beauty, Whitney is a true inspiration for everyone! (read more about her in my interview)
No better color than black to wear to any musical event. If you love classical music, black will make you look elegant and sophisticated. If you adore pop music—is there any color more popular then black? If you are into metal… no need to explain that one, right? The first outfit shows us what Whitney would wear to go to a music concert. Combining her black dress with playful red lace-up boots, a headband with gorgeous colors and that perfect (black) leather jacket in combination with striking red lips, black mascara and a casual but chic hairdo, Whitney is good to go to any music concert.
This dress, just like all black dresses, lends itself perfectly to wear on countless occasions. The second outfit shows us what Whitney would wear to attend an art exposition. Black is a neutral color, easily dressed up or down with whatever you decide to combine it with. Since an art opening is a classy, sophisticated and colorful environment, it is a great idea to go for simple combinations. In this case Whitney chose to keep the look neutral black and white, showing of her gorgeous geometrical golden earrings and lovely hair & make-up. Color is the perfect element to add to any outfit in order to make it more interesting. I would suggest using only one color in order to keep the look a consistent combination of monochromatic pieces.
Don’t you just love those laid back coffee shops on relaxing afternoons? The third outfit shows what Whitney would wear to go to a coffee shop. If you follow her example, you could easily add up to the Sunday morning-cosines that linger in these coffeehouses by wearing a similar vintage woolen sweater over your black maxi. I would suggest combining it with a knitted scarf like Whitney’s in order to keep warm and make this outfit picture-perfect while sipping a delicious hot beverage by choice.
I just came back from a day full of (sales-)shopping and trust me: a day like this requires comfortable, neutral stylish pieces. The last outfit shows us what Whitney would wear to go shopping downtown. Wearing an all black ensemble in combination with a fun print (elephant on blazer), cognac-colored boots and a (bigger) shiny bag doesn’t scream for attention, but at the same time you will not lose Whitney in the crowd due to these subtle accents. This interesting outfit, in combination with neutral make up (you don’t want to smear make-up on the clothes you’re trying on) and a simple loose hairdo (trust me, you’ll always mess up the hair in fitting rooms) is what you want to wear on these first days of sales.
I hope we’ve inspired you on how to style black maxi’s for several events. Remember: when it comes to using your imagination in order to style your outfit, the sky’s the limit, there are plenty of possibilities…
