So here is my sublime, self-altered vintage velvet moviestar dress I intended to wear to our family’s christmas party. I love how rich the red is, and how soft the velvet, and how it feels like something Joan Holloway would wear to a christmas party at Mad Men headquarters. The dress being snug and warm also allows for some sexy tights instead of black opaque sex appeal killers. Don’t get me wrong, I love black opaque tights, but I hate them when they are a “necessity”. I prefer being free to choose my hosiery. And these burgundy tights tickled my fancy today. I love how they don’t match and how they add more depth to the look than black fishnets would. And of course my fave new shoes, I love them so. They are ridiculously comfy, and I’m not one of those annoying girls who say that about the sickest mile high stiletto heels that kill the blood circulation in their toes. MOST heels just aren’t comfy at all, but these are and I wholeheartedly recommend them! Get them at Zara :)
About the christmas party: my family lives all over the place: brother in Holland, mother and sister halfway across the country, dad even further away, other brother in the USA… So getting together at a holiday party is pretty special for us since we hardly ever see each other. We talked, played games, listened to that silly Demis Rousos Christmas cd I always used to listen to this time of year when I was a little kid, and we made dinner together (and ate it of course). We even got each other some silly christmas gifts! My brother and his girlfriend gave me some gorgeously kitschy christmas decorations (a sparkly reindeer and a gold bird with a pink fluffy tail) that I’m very happy with. I want to start a new christmas tradition with friends bringing unique christmas decorations to put in our tree, the best way to create a gorgeous colection of memories. Now, I told my mom I would write about this on my blog, so here goes: I got a ridiculous pair of socks for christmas. I don’t know about you guys, but whenever people give me fashion related gifts, I get hugely disappointed. For some reason my taste is very hard to “get”, so people always end up getting me stuff I find absolutely preposterous or just plain boring. I get that, I just have a very particular taste probably, but my mom bought me black socks with a zebra printed faux fur trim. Seriously. How on earth does that translate into my wardrobe? My mom figured I can wear them with the fur trim peeking out of a pair of boots and that idea isn’t all bad, but ZEBRA? Zebra is so tacky :(
I literally just broke down laughing when I unpacked them because getting a completely fashion faux pas as a gift is basically a tradition in my family. And isn’t family tradition what christmas is all about? Yes, even christmas traditions you love to hate.
Do you have any family holiday traditions you love to hate?
