STYLE ICON: Mary-Kate Olsen
________________________
They say that two is better than one, but sometimes it’s better to focus on things one at a time. Take a look at Mary-Kate Olsen. Often categorized alongside her sister Ashley as “the Olsen twins”, this girl radiates with one-of-a-kind style all on her own. Always the more adventurous twin (and one of my top favorite personal fashion icons), Mary-Kate has never been afraid to express her creative side.
During her coming of age in the 1990’s, Mary-Kate refused to go the safe route in cute little mini dresses and polished pumps, or veer in the opposite direction by embracing every hip fad and trend. She rejected potential cookie-cutter teen stardom; proudly sporting artistically-experimental ensembles, much to both the admiration and antagonism of her fans and the general public. High-end fashion magazines like Teen Vogue, ELLE, and marie claire (the last of which Mary-Kate was featured on the cover no less than three different times) avidly supported her unique fashion sense, where more mainstream gossip periodicals put Mary-Kate on their “Worst Dressed” lists.
Although Mary-Kate’s individual fashion preferences have gradually altered somewhat over the years, her “style philosophy” remains the same. A unique mix of bohemian and grunge, laced with a hint gothic glamour and saturated in vintage (her favorite decades are the 70’s and 90’s), this Olsen twin is an enlightened style guru in the eyes of likeminded creative dressers. From the oversized sunglasses and huge slouchy beanie hats of the early 2000’s to the more polished all-black chicness of today this youngest Olsen twin has a golden star on fashion’s walk of fame.

Take a look at how these Chictopians were influenced (knowingly or not) by Mary-Kate’s past and present style history, via four of her most famous outfit elements:
Queen of everything long and printed, Mary-Kate reigns supreme in the land of exotic kaftan dress. turquoisepassion works her own Olsen-esque kaftan in this Oriental-print sheer number, paired with prim brown leather accessories and quirky gold jewelry.

Can you say meooowww? Mary-Kate sure knows how to dress up an ensemble with a statement making leopard-print scarf . Hanging loose around the neck, Hawaiikidd sports his own “animalistic” accessory, accented with casual denim shorts and gladiator sandals.

Mary-Kate’s recent clothing choices are flirting with the idea of a faerie-tale romance. Scandinavian beauty, AmandaBrohman looks like an ethereal snow angel in this romantically-monochromatic white and ivory outfit, jazzed up with a fur wrap.

In her earlier fashion days, Mary-Kate avidly sported 90’s grungy floral items. Although her look has somewhat transitioned over time, Chictopians like Christing still don versions of this all-time Olsen favorite.
