While this outfit doesn't scream public speaking to me, it is lovely nonetheless.

I think it's always best to wear a button down shirt to presentations, but that's just me... And I guess it really depends on the class/subject/type of presentation.

Dressing for presentations/speeches   Add as Favorite Photo

Casual Style, best suited for a Everyday
Jun 05, 2008

Yesterday in my public speaking class, I gave a speech on Pro Gay marriage laws. Generally, I’m not one of those people who get really nervous about giving speeches just because I’ve been doing it for so long but I know a lot of people who are. The only tip I have for that is, BREATHE.
I know, I’m not very helpful in that regard but I can give some advice on dressing for your next presentation or speech in front of class.

Dressing well when you’re giving a presentation or speech is very important. You want to wear something you feel comfortable in because speech giving can be a nerve-wracking ordeal and you don’t want to feel fussy in your outfit when you’re trying to focus on your speech. I understand that some professors require you to dress up, but I’ve found that most feel that it’s best to just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. However, do realize that you will be speaking in front of your peers and someone who’s grading you, so at least look presentable.

Now there are a few key rules you should consider when dressing for a presentation/speech.

KISS rule (keep it simple, stupid!) No loud colors, complex designs and shirts with phrases/sayings. That just makes it distracting for your audience and takes away from your speech when you’re up there speaking and you’re wearing a t-shirt that says “Mo Money, Mo Bitches” on it. (some dude in my class really wore that!)

Less is more! Try not to wear too much jewelry or accessories. Bracelets especially because they can be noisy and if you’re speaking behind a podium like I was, my usual array of bracelets would have caused as quite a distraction by clanking against it. A simple watch will suffice and helps you keep track of how long you’ve been speaking.

Lastly, keep your hair out of your face! Nothing is more annoying than someone constantly tucking the hair behind their ears or twirling it around their fingers. My professor actually takes off one point for every hair tuck!

I really like looops and nourahshammari’s
outfits. Both really chic and simple and perfect for giving a presentation!

Remember, dressing well should enhance your presentation, not take away from it with distracting clothes and accessories.

Now go get that A you deserve!

P.S. Today was the last day of class of my freshman year! Whooot.

xoxo,
lindar
