StylePantry is definitely in my top Chictopian daily inspiration. She has such astonishing taste, is a full-time mom, works in the fashion industry and besides that she owns one of the most amazing fashionable lifestyle blogs.
Folake Kuye, you have your own label and are an active member of the fashion industry, let’s go back to the beginning, how did it all start for you? I have always worked in the fashion business. I launched a clothing line right after I graduated college in 1999, but couldn’t afford for the line to really take off so I went into styling. At that time I worked on music videos, commercials, editorials, and movies. After a while I got tired of the hours, so I decided to go back to designing and creating my own independent boho label (WeWe Clothing).
That sounds like an amazing experience, why did you start blogging about fashion? I first started in February of 2009, because I needed another outlet to express my creativity. A couple of months ago I started featuring myself in the “my style” category. For the longest time, I was blogging anonymously because I am quite shy. I figured if I’m going to advice about fashion, inspire, or share, the only way to do so, or for people to see my points valid (or not) is to show them who I am and what really defines me.
Your website looks very professional, what’s the story behind that? It’s my husbands work, he is a creative director/art director. I wanted something well designed, mature, and sexy. Something different; an online magazine that served as a bucket for a beautiful lifestyle. He understands my vision and executed it beyond imagination. We feature everything from our favorite meal/restaurant, to the latest lookbooks from Zara and H&M, to my own personal style.
How would you describe your own signature style? Well, my core style is the boho, gypsy look, but I am by no way limited to that. It all depends on my mood and the music I wake up to. Ultimately, I just want to be comfortable in what I’m wearing and I take pride in looking good, especially as a mom. My mission is to inspire other moms. To let them know that having children is not the end of the world. You can still be a yummy mummy :)
You yourself are a mother of 3, what’s your favorite piece of garment to chase your kids around in? A long flowy, maxi. I am always in a caftan at home, I own so many of those.
If you could do anything/anywhere, where would you be and what would you be doing? I’d be living on a remote Island somewhere wearing a caftan, having a turban on my head and a drink in my hand, watching the kids surf, play and be happy :)
Your hair is absolutely stunning!! Is it naturally this gorgeous, what are your tips and tricks? Thank you. I truly appreciate that. My husband says my hair is always gorgeous, but I think he is only saying that. I do have bad hair days, those days I put on a turban or a hat. The only special routine I have is braiding my hair before going to bed at night, greasing my hair, and making sure my scalp is moisturized. In the morning, I pick it out, and I’m good to go.
When you have a do like mine, a good trick is to make sure people are not touching your hair. It’s hard to get it to look a certain way, and the worst thing is for a stranger or anyone to touch and mess up the flow of it. I think any big do wearer would agree.. lol
What is your favorite garment in your wardrobe? My favorite piece right now is a vintage dress that I’m yet to feature on Chictopia. It was one of my best finds. The colors are amazing, the shape is stunning and it’s a maxi…
Is there any item you think everyone should own? I hate to sound like a broken record, but a caftan. It immediately turns you into glam mode. You feel sexy, stylish and most importantly, comfortable. It changes your attitude.
When did you learn about Chictopia and why did you decide to join? A few months ago, a friend mentioned it, I decided to take a look and have been hooked ever since. It’s such a fantastic concept, a great platform for people who want to express and inspire through clothing/style; I love it.
What’s your favorite feature on Chictopia? I’m still learning, but out of all the similar websites I know of, this one is the most user friendly and that’s a big deal for me. I have accounts set up on other chic sites, but I can assure you that I have only updated those accounts once or never. This community is such a very friendly bunch, everyone is so nice and kind and there’s a strong presence of uplifting one another.
You are pretty new to chictopia and already very popular and on the list of possible style icons for the month of October. How does that feel? I doubt I’ll be anyone’s Style Icon, let alone Chictopia’s anytime soon… There are way more stylish and popular souls ahead of me, it’s a very generous compliment and I appreciate it, but I doubt that it’s going to happen. I am truly having the time of my life on here. I have made really cool friends (like you, Angie), of whom I look forward to seeing their updates. The creativity just blows my mind, I love it, and it is absolutely inspiring.
And I am very happy to have met you this way too!! You have been featured on the homepage several times now. How do you make your pictures stand out? I am no expert, every day my picture lands in the gallery I’m surprised and when I land on that first page, it feels like winning something. All I can say is ALWAYS BE YOURSELF.
You already are a style icon in my heart. You already seem like you have everything in the bag, but I still would like to wish you luck in life with everything that may cross your path!!
