Chic People: thevagabond
With the seasonal structure of runway shows and designer collections, it’s easy to think that fashion should be orderly and meticulous. Contrastingly, Chictopia user, thevagabond, proves that haphazard creativity is the key to great style. She joined our community just over two months ago, but her sharp eye for putting together outfits is bound to become a classic favorite here on Chictopia.
1. Q: How did you hear about Chictopia and why did you decide to join?
A: I started to see a trend of Chictopia links on my fellow fashion bloggers’ blogs and clicked it out of curiosity because I found the term ‘Chictopia’ extraordinarily interesting and clever. Chictopia instantly won me over at first glance because I really liked the format of the site.
2. Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a member of Chictopia?
A: Everyone is so nice here! People leave darling comments and there are just all sorts of diverse people with such eye-candy outfits that make my eyes turn green with envy.
3. Q: How did you get interested in fashion and outfit blogging? What did you dress like as a little girl?
A: For as long as I can recall, I have always been interested in fashion. As a young girl, I loved to dress up and make myself all pretty and look like a doll, but had little freedom in doing so since my mother restricted me from putting on makeup and painting my nails and such during elementary school. I understood the makeup thing, but I just could not stray away from the nail polish! Haha, I used to wear a lot of those cute little girl dresses and outfits too. But as I grew older, only wearing dresses didn’t satisfy me anymore and from then on I started to broaden my style and gradually learned how to style myself the way I thought was appealing to me.
4. Q: Does your Chictopia username have anything to do with the nomadic, effortlessly-eclectic way you dress? What does it mean to be a fashion vagabond?
A: Yes, I specifically chose thevagabond (lavagabonddame) as my username because I never quite had a concrete style, sort of like how a vagabond does not have a permanent home. I dubbed myself a fashion vagabond because my style is always fluctuating and I am constantly taking in new ideas and inspiration and learning new ways to incorporate new styles that appeal to me into my outfits.
5. Q: It’s interesting how you sport a mix of both ‘busy’ and ‘minimalistic’ outfits. How do you determine the complexity of your ensembles?
A: I literally just randomly throw pieces together and see if the result appeals to me. Sometimes it will be very simple or minimalistic or very busy as you say. And other times, it depends on my mood and how much time I have in the morning.
6. Q: We adore your signature bright red lipstick! What brand and shade do you use? Can you give us some advice on how to work the much-coveted, yet simultaneously feared red lip?
A: The brand and shade that I am wearing in my photos is L’Oreal in British Red. I really love red lipstick because I like how it contrasts against my jet black hair and my in-between fair and olive skin. I think red lipstick is always a great way to spice up any outfit with a pop of color and for me it is always a must because I just j’adore adding that little “oomph” to my look. My advice is to not be afraid to channel red lipstick because it can easily tie outfits together or make really minimalistic outfits just that more appealing to the eye.
7. Q: What is your favorite place to buy clothes?
A: Secondhand/charity/vintage shops! I go absolutely crazy ecstatic when I find vintage pieces that eventually make their way to my trove of vintage clothing.
8. Q: Do you have any fashion inspirations or style icons?
A: I don’t have any specifics since I am constantly inspired by everything and everyone. Though I find my biggest inspirations from fellow fashion bloggers because they are really just everyday normal people, but with extremely stylish and chic taste in clothes. As well as the fashion statements back in the day, I like old stuff but with a modern twist. And I do occasionally keep up with a few favorite models’ off-duty styles.
9. Q: What’s your number one favorite item in your wardrobe?
A: This is an extremely hard question to answer since I love each and every piece of clothing/accessory I own. But at the moment, I am obsessing over this black and white striped floor length Maxi dress I just ordered (not exactly IN my wardrobe at the moment but will be soon! Hehe.) I also love these pair of clogs I thrifted, just to throw that out there.
10. Q: Which fall fashion are you most looking forward to? How do you plan to emulate these trends in your own wardrobe?
A: Oh dear, fall season is my favorite and the season I look forward to the most considering that is also when The September Issue comes as well. I love everything about fall fashion. I seriously do. I love all the neutral tones that come out and the layering and more layering and boots, and fur and leather, wool, all that sweet jazz. I just love fall and a lot of my outfits somehow relate to fall be it the material or silhouette.
11. Q: If you could single-handily popularize or bring back one trend, what would it be and why?
A: Without a doubt, the 1920’s flapper style! Even the term’s meaning just brings excitement! The 1920’s is my favorite time period in America due to the fact that it was when women started to wear clothes more freely and revealing and also the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald who wrote one of my favorite novels – The Great Gatsby.
