Chic People: thevintagesociety
thevintagesociety is one of the most well-seasoned (and well-dressed) members here on Chictopia. She’s proudly borne the title of “Chictopian” since the spring of 2008. Not only does thevintagesociety closely resemble Carrie Bradshaw in terms of facial features and hairstyle, but her unique way of dressing (as she proclaims herself) is much akin to the legendary style of this famed SATC character.
1. Q: How did you hear about Chictopia and why did you decide to join?
A: Wow, I don’t even remember! I probably stumbled on it while looking
through another blog. I think i joined back in 2007 or 2008.
2. Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a member of Chictopia?
A: I love the interaction between everyone, people are so sweet and
encouraging. I also love discovering new people around the world.
3. Q: How did you get interested in fashion and outfit blogging? How has
your style evolved over the years, and how did you dress as a little girl?
A: Originally, I discovered one of the first flickr groups to post outfits
and started doing it in the beginning of 2007…then I stumbled on
Chictopia and liked the format and the community aspect, so I started
uploading photos there! It began as a fun thing, and it has developed
into this whole crazy world that I wouldn’t have guessed back then.
My style has evolved of course the way it does with new trends and such..
but I definitely think taking photos helps you to see what looks good and
what doesn’t-you learn more of who you are and what you love and how to
edit yourself. It challenges you!
As a little girl I was torn between trying to be a tomboy (cause my
brother was so cool) wearing camo pants that I cut off and baseball
jerseys and then being a total girl and playing dress up for hours from
vintage clothes that I found at garage sales. I wish I had kept some of
those dress up clothes. They were insane-brocade coats with fur
collars, 50’s dresses…man to go back in time and get them back!
4. Q: Your Chictopia username is self-descriptive: you obviously love your
vintage! What is your favorite decade or time period for vintage clothing,
and how can we smoothly transition the looks of different decades into our
own personal styles?
A: Well my name is The Vintage Society which was the name of my original
blog, now it is B. Jones Style. But, yes…I love vintage! My favorite
era is probably the 70’s – I love the luxe disco 70’s, the boho 70’s and
the big hair. I always try to modernize my vintage, though! I never want
to look like I am wearing a costume. So many of the designers are inspired
by vintage, so really I am picking up the latest modern trends; just
finding a one of a kind piece that reflects the trends. I usually keep
thing modern with hair, makeup, shoes and accessories!
5. Q: Your outfits are always so diverse and unique! We love how you sport
a variety of different looks, ranging from “dapper British gent chic” to
“bohemian goddess” and “90’s extraordinaire”. How has your wardrobe come
to encompass such a plethora of fashion genres?
A: I think I am diverse because of my personality and interest in many
things, but I always try to keep something true to myself in each look;
something is the same and signature to me – which is I love dramatic,
glamorous and vintage inspired dressing. So even if one day I am in
“dapper British chic” mode and then next “bohemian goddess”, I think I am always
pulling for the dramatic, glamorous, vintage-inspired look.
6. Q: Where do you shop for clothes?
A: I am a weird shopper. I don’t usually do traditional stores-though I
love Forever 21, H&M, and Zara. I shop at a lot of vintage shops,
buy/sell/trade stores like Crossroads Trading Co. and thrift stores for
sure! I have recently enjoyed purchasing higher-end classic pieces that I
can have for a life time, like a coat from Opening Ceremony, Prada Boots,
or vintage purses like Mulberry and Louis Vuitton.
7: Q: What is the signature element of your personal style?
A: I mentioned that I always try to have dramatic, glamorous,
vintage-inspired looks, but there also some things that I am always drawn
to: high waisted anything, gobs of cocktail rings, and hats. I also really
love to use my hair as an accessory to my look: top knot buns, braids in
all ways, big bouncy hair, French twist…anything and everything!
8. Q: Fashion-wise, with what famous literary or film character do you
most identify?
A: I know it is cliché, but probably Carrie Bradshaw. She is always playing
dress up, doing up her hair and hitting the streets in crazy looks!
9. Q: What’s your number one favorite item in your wardrobe?
A: Right now, especially as we go into fall it is my Opening Ceremony coat.
It is camel colored, a cape take on a trench and it has short sleeves with
a dramatic drape in the back. I love wearing it belted or open or as a
dress or layered over looks. I will probably be wearing it every other
day once fall really kicks in.
10: Q: We loved the two hair tutorials you posted on your blog! Do you
have any more tutorials planned for the future?
A: Thanks! I have fun doing them, because I really think hair can be a great
way to step up a look. YES! I plan on running a new hair tutorial every
week! So check back-there are tons to come!
11. Q: Are you looking forward to any particular fall fashion trends?
A: So many! Camel, 50’s dressing, army-chic, cowboy-chic, fur, leopard.
Sounds fun, doesn’t it? PLEASE FALL, come soon!
