I feel like prom. But it’s not. For one thing, I’m 24 and not 18. Sigh. Second thing, my actual prom had my classmates and I cramped into a small overpriced space in the basement of some fancy schmancy hotel. Thank GOD it’s not prom!
Confronted with the challenge of putting together a “formal” outfit on the cheap, there were a few things I had to consider:
1. Fabrication – cheaper fabrics means you need to make up for it in the formality of the dress. Example: my dress is jersey, therefore, I looked for a long dress to distinguish it from your typical “night” dress.
2. Silhouette – sometimes a complicated ballgown isn’t necessary. One of my favorite looks from the night was this girl wearing a beaded sari. I love the idea of an unconventional shape. I’m so over the ballgown. Unless it is completely over-the-top a la Scarlett in Gone with the Wind.
3. Accessories – if you choose to go more casual, like I did, a good idea is to load up on accessories to make the overall look more cohesive and interesting.
4. Budget – remember, this is a one time thing (at least for me). Think hard before you invest in something too far out of your normal style. I can easily wear this dress again on a more casual occasion.

POST-EDIT: Hmm I have no idea why my face looks so washed out in these photos. Must be the flash. Sorry about that, kids.
