I’ve always been one to incorporate vintage pieces into my everyday wardrobe. Most of my closet includes pieces that I found at local thrift stores.
IIn high school, ‘vintage’ wasn’t something that was well-known on campus – thrift stores were considered taboo. When I came to school in an outfit comprised of entirely vintage pieces, I brought a sense of freshness to my school – a cheap alternative to Urban Outfitters or California Select @ American Apparel. While all the girls were wearing flats or sandals, I was sporting oxfords (my 3 year love affair! I was the first person who brought androgynous shoes to my school!). While my classmates were at the mall scoping out the new Hollister track jackets, I was on Melrose Ave swooning over high-waisted shorts or shoes that nobody else would ever think about wearing.
I strayed away from the norm in high school. I was an individual, & that’s what people knew me for – my unique fashion sense.
