Newcomer AshleyOh has already graced the front page of Chictopia twice and is quickly becoming one of my favorite Chictopians. She’s also in the running for this month’s Style Icon. With her great use of color and prints it’s not hard to see why! She kindly agreed to an interview with me for EIU.

1. You’re relatively new to Chictopia (welcome!!). How did you hear about it and why did you start posting? And how are you liking it here so far?
I am, and I’m already having quite a bit of fun! I heard about Chictopia through several bloggers I follow who participate. I admire their personal style so much that I was curious to see if I could find even more inspiration through this site… And it has exceeded my expectations! I started posting my own outfits because I’ve been getting back into blogging myself and I was curious what the response would be. Let’s just say I’ve been blushing a lot over the many sweet comments, and I was tickled to find myself featured on the main page twice in only two weeks! Craaazy and so very flattering!
2. From the outfits you’ve posted, it seems like you’re not afraid of color and prints, which is so refreshing to see. Do you have any tips for those who aren’t as bold as you?
I definitely have the adventuresome spirit of a much older lady, the kind who mixes weird colors and piles on layers and interesting accessories without caring what others think. I do get some funny looks on the street sometime, but I don’t mind looking a bit kooky and standing out. It’s so much more fun! I’m not one for fashion rules, but there is one I do follow without much thought: wear what you love. I would advise anyone trying to incorporate more color and pattern into their wardrobe to really go for it, and not be afraid of some silliness. I have so much fun finding new ways of wearing vintage and thrifted pieces with newer items, and that’s how it should be… I think I just never outgrew my favorite girlhood game of playing dress up. I am playing dress up every day!
3. What is your current favorite summer trend, and why?
I love love love that the clothing in stores right now is more girlish and vintage-inspired and romantic than usual. I have a few masculine/tomboy tendencies, but for the most part I am terribly whimsical. I’m fond of channeling favorite literary and movie characters but putting my own spin on it, and for Summer I keep going back to Lolita. There is one photo of Sue Lyon, the actress who played Lolita in the Kubrick version of the movie, lounging in the grass wearing a two-piece playsuit, a wide-brimmed hat, and her iconic heart-shaped sunglasses. Perfection!
4. What is your go-to outfit on those days when you wake up late and have to head out the door within minutes?
I have an embarrassingly large collection of dresses (mostly vintage), so I will usually throw on one of those… often a short, swingy dress, which is my favorite shape. And to complete the look I will add tights (a must in San Francisco!), a long pendent necklace, ballet flats, and most importantly: a cardigan! I never leave my apartment without a cardigan, regardless of what I am wearing. My boyfriend and I joke that my detective name would be Cardigan Ording. You will almost never see me in pants, it’s so much easier for me to put on a dress or a skirt with a blouse!
5. How would you describe your style and what has influenced it the most?
Oh man… I could blather on and on about this but I will try not to! I would say that my style is quite eclectic and romantic. I tend to waver between Overgrown Schoolgirl and Charmingly Crazy Old Lady. Every decade holds some influence for me, I certainly don’t feel tied down to any particular era or style. But my wardrobe will always be filled with lace, bows, silk, florals, and color. I’m influenced at least 50 times a day, whether it be a blog, some handsomely dressed older woman on the street, a scene from an old movie, or an editorial in a magazine. I soak everything up. I collect beautiful things obsessively. I will always be dressed in a way that pleases me first and foremost. And if my style inspires or makes someone smile, then all the better!
1. Bags or Shoes? Shoes, but only by an inch!
2.Chocolate or Vanilla? Lavender flavored chocolate, please!
3. Heels or Flats? I walk EVERYwhere, so flats are best for me… but I have equal pairs of both!
4. Stripes or Florals? I almost always wear them together, so it’s a toss up.
5. Tea or Coffee? Tea… Earl Grey with milk.
