Is it a stretch to say the printed-satin Miu Miu platforms were/are one of the most coveted items this season? I’ll answer my own rhetorical question – absolutely not. Of course the quality of such brands is undeniably better than most commercially available, but the bird print was so pretty, yet so simple. I was actually planning on thrifting a couple items to paint on, but then I came across these platform clogs… and I instantly thought back to the magical shoes of S/S 2010. Anyway, these shoes were a surprisingly easy 1 hour project completed before I left for the beach. I definitely don’t feel like I can take much credit, but I’ll run through the easy steps to customize these shoes!
1. Gather materials
I used the cheapest white fabric paint I could find, along with a paper plate, a pencil, and a small paintbrush. Follow all instructions on the paint for drying times and other miscellaneous steps that shouldn’t be overlooked.
2. Draw in pencil
Yes, I exaggerated and re-drew the birds on Paint Shop Pro. Regardless, the shapes are actually quite easy – I didn’t use the same exact print as the “real” shoes, but I just put together some shapes to obtain a bird. The birds I used are hardly more than oblong ovals with a few triangles off the sides.
3. Roughly paint design
Applying a base coat makes it helpful for when you’re trying to focus on small details in the next step. Also, if you happen to smudge any parts, it’s easier to fix with a thin, rough layer as opposed to a heavy layer.
4. Apply another coat
I think it goes without saying, but it’s crucial to be extra-careful with this step. All you’re doing is making the paint even and defining small details… and then you’re done!
