My (humble) tips for dressing for the markets: leggings and a short dress are definitely easiest – you can try things like shorts on in public with minimum hassle/exposure. Slip on shoes. No jacket if you can get away with it – bulky sleeves get in the way when digging through piles on the ground. Bag with a long strap that you don’t mind putting on the ground. No glasses/sunglasses/hats that might slip, once again, if you can, because I always find myself worried they will fall off into a pile and I won’t notice! No jewelery that will snag on clothes/rings that will fall off. Also, don’t be too fussy with your hair ‘cos if it rains, too bad, there’s no room to put up an umbrella! I guess on that note, wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet too! For example, this morning it lightly rained on and off, I had my hair up in a bun with a scarf tied around my head and the rain didn’t bother me one bit. Also, bring your own bag to take your haul home in. This may not be an issue in other places, but here, plastic bags have been banned in supermarkets, at some you can buy them for 10cents, but basically this means that stall-holders tend to not have bags to give out.
