I have a confession to make: I’m obsessed with the color mustard. Well, I guess maybe it wasn’t really a confession because it’s pretty obvious from my Chictopia blog that the color mustard often appears in my wardrobe choices. Yellow is cheery and hopeful. Yet, paradoxically, the color also signifies danger and hazard. These contradictory associations make yellow a magical, mischevious, and mysterious color palette. And mustard is no exception: magic, mischief and mystery rolled into one.
Part of the attractive feature of the mustard shade of yellow is its versatility. It easily fits into any seasonal wardrobe. Bold enough for fall colors, yet also refreshing for summer, you just can’t go wrong. I’m also a firm believer that mustard is rare in its ability to flatter all skin tones, thus increasing its appeal.
Here are a few tips and tricks for incorporating it into your wardrobe:
1. Don’t be shy!
Have you ever found a mustard-colored dress and felt it was too much of a good thing? Think again! You can never have too much of this color in your palette. Wearing a mustard frock can be easily done, with just a few things to keep in mind…
2. Keep it simple.
Mustard is a pretty bold color. It stands out. Think of it as your statement piece. You don’t need to pair it with lots of fancy accessories because you’ll already stand out in a crowd with such a fashion forward color choice.
3. Pair with neutrals.
As an eye-catching color, it’s often wise to tone down the rest of your ensemble with more neutral colors. Think brown, navy, black or grey.
4. Use sparingly with other colors.
I for one am obsessed with mustard-colored tights these days. And, I really want to wear them with colorful dresses! To keep my ensemble from being too over the top, I make sure the mustard is used more as an accent color than the main focus of my ensemble.
