What is it about geek chic these days that’s so appealing? I for one am completely in love with this trend; if it stuck around forever I would be perfectly happy, to be honest. All I have to do is throw on my nerdy spectacles and necktie and I instantly feel stylish. On a recent estate sale shopping expedition, I came across a jackpot of neckties. I could not pass them by!
I did a little digging (well, I didn’t have to dig that far thanks to Wikipedia), and found that modern day neckties date back to the 17th century, in which Croatian merceneries were the first known to wear the cravat (later evolving into the necktie). Parisians were so impressed by these “cravattes” that it became a fashion sensation in France worn by men and women alike back in the day. Cool story, but I don’t think it’s the Croats from the 1600s inspiring me to throw on my bowties.
Maybe the appeal of geek chic is all about the school uniform. Is it the appearance of being a young scholar that’s oh so chic? Is bookish the new black?
Our resident style galleries show our fellow Chictopians are no strangers to geek chic styling, complete with their own school ties and spectacles:
