You might have noticed the over-abundance of plaid these days. Well, plaid/ flannel/ tartan/ whatever you want to call it is back. Whether you like it, or not.
I wanted to find a plaid shirt. Not the subtle kind. More like the… HEY CHECK OUT MY PLAID SHIRT kind. It’s so hard finding the right one because there are a lot of ugly options out there. A good reference is Vivienne Westwood. Her plaids are killer.
My favorite inspiration this year is Topshop’s lookbook. There are so many good ways to wear plaid in there. Here is what I’ve learned:
Button up! – I really like the idea of buttoning up your plaid shirt all the way. It gives off kind of a preppy touch, but you can toughen that up with some jewelry. Shirts with small/ short collars work best for this.
When in doubt, black looks best – Pairing your plaid with black is an easy way to avoid looking like you just stepped out of the 90’s. Unless of course, that’s what you were going for.
Playing around with fit – There’s a lot of ways you could go with this. But usually, if your shirt is oversized, try tucking it into a high-waisted mini or wearing it with some skinny jeans.
And finally, face it, you’re a hipster – Be prepared for the “hipster” comments. You’re wearing a plaid shirt for god sakes. There’s no need to be upset. It’s just a fact of life: like spam, death, or taxes.
Happy shirting!
