I’ve already mentioned the denim on denim look in my previous article but I like it so much I thought I’d give it its own separate post. Whether or not you like the trend it’s definitely been making numerous appearances on personal and street style blogs alike. I actually don’t even feel right calling it a “trend” because it’s a look that’s always been around and yet so many people shy away from it. And honestly I can understand why. After seeing a few catastrophic attempts by celebrities and any other unfortunate variation of the “Canadian tuxedo” (google it) you may have seen, it’s safe to say that it’s a look that’s very easy to get wrong. And isn’t that what fashion people love to do? Take things that are considered hideous by the general public and turn it into something arguably chic, I’m looking at you drop crotch sweatpants! While I don’t believe there are any secret or golden rules to looking good in a denim outfit I think a few tips are in order:
Shades Shades Shades
One of the easiest ways of avoiding looking like you’re wearing a “Canadian tuxedo” (did you look it up yet?) is by pairing pieces with different washes. You man mix and match colored jeans of course, but if you want to stick to blue try wearing a lighter shade on top and a darker one below or vice versa.
Size Matters
While this doesn’t always apply to everyone, I find that sticking with cuts that are fitted help to keep you from looking like you’ve been engulfed by a sea of denim ugliness. Excuse my horrible diction, but I think it gets my point across pretty accurately. And on that note…
Length
The key to not look like your wearing a denim suit is well don’t wear a denim suit. If you’re planning on wearing a denim jacket, try denim shorts and tights to add some dimension to the outfit. If you’re wearing jeans opt for a vest or short sleeved top in a different shade.
Accessorize
Brighten up the look with a few well placed accessories. This will also keep you from looking like a lesbian cowboy as mentioned in my previous article.
