Welcome to TeenUgly!
As you may or may not know my name is Camille, and I will be your guide through the very ugly world of teenage fashion. The stereotype of how teenagers dress is overwhelmingly negative and to tell the truth, when I think of teenage fashion in a general sense, madras Bermuda shorts, bad graphic tees and dirtied flip-flops immediately come to mind; however, I am here to change all of that.
With the days of summer dwindling away, the topic on the mind’s of most teenagers is going back to school and with that is what to wear to that first day back. Here are a couple things to keep in mind when planning your outfit.
Be Yourself
In my opinion, just because it’s the first day back, you shouldn’t really dress any differently than you would any other day, so whether you a proud advocate of 90’s grunge, rocking combat boots and plaid or a fan of a strong silhouette in head-to-toe black, be yourself! Don’t dumb your style down just to fit in with the sea of teenagers in light-wash boot cut jeans and too-tight tees! Don’t be afraid to stand out!
Is it appropriate?
You might be able to get away with a bandage mini and sky-high heels during the summer, but will it be appropriate in the classroom setting? Also keep in mind if your school has a dress code- you don’t want to get in trouble! (This really only applies to middle/high schoolers)
Act Your Age
Crocs, cropped sweaters/hoodies, bedazzled denim, magenta & turquoise color palettes, etc. should all be left in the past once you reach your teens (even better if left untouched before then). You can do better than that!
Comfort
Those four-inch heels you’ve got on may make your legs look miles long, but are you going to be feeling so great about them after a couple of hours? You don’t want to be ‘that girl limping from class to class’ (especially when it’s your first day) so make sure you’re going to be comfortable in whatever you’re wearing. Opt for flats if it’s a new school and there is a possibility of getting lost- there’s nothing worse than trying to navigate the halls to get to a class you’re already late for when your feet are throbbing and your ankles feel like they’re about to give.
To get you started, here are some looks that would make perfect back to school outfits. The Back To School gallery is also a great source of inspiration when planning your outfit.
