Hello Chictopians, shall we talk scarves?
It has been said that the difference between you (assuming you’re not Parisian) and a chic, Parisian lady, is a scarf. The proper scarf can add a lot of personality to any outfit. For those of us in, or heading into true winter, a scarf can also be essential to staying warm.
Vintage: The greatest scarves you will ever find are vintage ones found on the cheap at secondhand stores. With quirky prints and mysterious histories, these scarves are unique and pretty; an unbeatable combination. Wear one in a traditional style, or tie it in a more modern bow. In summer right now? Try it Rosie-the-riveter style in your hair, or a small neck-kerchief like Faye Dunaway in “Bonnie and Clyde.”
Modern: Two very “now” scarf looks are the circle scarf and the belted scarf.
Once you own a circle scarf you get the hype. It really can be styled so many different ways and is super comfy. American Apparel is obviously really well known for its versatile, jersey version. Yarnovermovement offers some deliciously cozy, hand knit versions in a variety of textures and quality I can personally attest to.
The belted scarf has really caught my eye this month. Seen here on Chictopians Tieka and Delightfuly Tacky. Very modern and very chic.
Not Chic: As chic as a scarf is, we can all go wrong with this accessory. The Keffiyeh has become synonymous with hipsters and needs to be retired. Unless it is part of your cultural heritage to wear this scarf, consider storing it until it is less overdone. Another look to avoid is the head scarf. Now, I’m the first person to consider old people wicked dressers (check out Advanced Style for some inspiration), however unless you want to be mistaken for your grandma or look like you walked out of a production of “Fiddler On The Roof,” avoid this style. You’re too young and too hot for it!
So, go experiment and find a scarf that suits you this season!
