Let me start off by saying that I am NOT a shorts kind of guy. My blinding paleness, beanstalk stature, and aversion to athletics has generally kept my legs covered up in one way or another. But with the latest heat wave in San Francisco, I needed something to keep cool.
I had been contemplating the bevy of drop crotch goods that have hit the market the last few seasons, but found most of them boring or uninspired. In a fashion climate like this, you aren’t going to sell me a pair of pants just because you took some normal trousers and sewed the crotch seam a few inches lower than usual. And that’s exactly why when Jenny brought in the Reverse Balloon Short from her friend Austin Sherbanenko’s label Odyn Vovk, I couldn’t help myself. It wasn’t the subtle drop, the leather drawstring, super functional pockets, or even the ridiculously comfortable slubby reversed cotton that sold me. No, it was the fantastic shape they have on the body — a show of how deceptively simple so many of Austin’s cuts and designs are — that made me realize yes, I can wear shorts, and no, I won’t look like a lame-o who’s wearing his dad’s oversized bottoms.
