As I stepped out for my afternoon coffee, sun beating down from a cloudless blue sky and beads of sweat collecting themselves on the nape of my neck, I wondered what persuaded me to don heavy denim jeans. I’ve spent the past two summers in Chicago and New York which surely have contributed to my newly adopted belief that high 70s is the new summer normal. So, when I check weather.com for my local temperature, I say to myself that the meteorologists can’t possibly mean that it really feels like 98 degrees outside. Meteorologists are wrong pretty often, right?
Wrong.
You’ll really have to forgive me for being so lackadaisical with my summer time outfits. I see my fair share of editorials recommending knee-hi leather boots under a poly-blend floral dress, all topped off with a denim jacket. I just laugh. I’m not sure those editors understand my firm stance against anything involving socks in weather like this. And a jacket? Ha. You all are so funny.
All this heat and laughing leads me to put on the easiest outfit that comes to mind. This usually consists of tank tops of various colors over denim shorts of various washes. I have three pairs of Havaianas. Don’t judge me.
While I’m busy drowning in thoughtless ensembles, several Chictopians have the right idea, channeling their inner exotic goddess in light, easy dresses. This is sure not to be the last you’ll see of prints as lively as these since the runways a la Prada sport plenty of resort time duds to dress up in.
Take your style hints from resh, rosesneverfallinlove, rahpunen and jos. Long or short, breezy dresses and simple sandals help to drive away the summer heat. Don’t count on me to lead you down a fashionable path. Unless someday, flip-flops become the new in thing.
