Chictopia caught up with the leading (and well-heeled!) lady from band Vedera for the inside scoop on her style. The songbird has been delighting audiences with her honey-soft voice since 2004, not to mention with her fierce style, and is well worth a listen and look for those who have yet to discover this surplus of style and sound!
Here’s the scoop:
1. How would you describe your fashion style?
Ever-changing; I am more influenced by street culture than I am by fashion magazines. I try to make sure I always have pieces that can be worn on the road. I have to be comfortable. I’ve tried wearing crazy, non-functional pieces on stage and it just doesn’t work. For me, there needs to be a balance.
2. Favorite designers?
Phillip Lim, Helmut Lang, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Luella Bartley.
3. How does your regular apparel compare to what you wear on stage?
The line is blurring more and more. I like there to be an easy transition from road to stage. One difference is that I don’t always wear heels, but I have to wear them on stage!
4. In what way does your music inspire your clothing?
Completely. What I say and do needs to reflect what I’m wearing. I can’t let my clothes distract from the message I’m trying to get across.
5. Favorite places to shop?
H & M, thrift stores, Urban Outfitters, random vintage and boutique stores I find on the road, Miss Sixty has some rad shoes, Top Shop, pixiemarket.com, loverthelabel.com.
6. Most ridiculous item in your closet?
Heels too uncomfortable for any sane person and spandex.
7. Whose style do you look up to?
Currently Leila Moss from the Duke Spirit.
8. How would you describe your sound to people who haven’t heard you yet?
Organic pop rock.
9. How long have you been playing music / when did you decide this is what you wanted to do?
I started writing poetry in seventh grade around when Fiona Apple put out “Tidal” and I got my first guitar when I was 17. I’ve taken dance and been in performance art since I was younger, but it wasn’t until probably 2004 that I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
10. Which musicians do you look up to?
Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Nina Persson, Dolores O’Riordan, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, Carol King, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Dolores O’Riordan, etc. There are boys too, Doves, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, The Fray, Incubus…anyone who means it.
11. What’s been playing on your iPod recently?
The new Metric album “Fantasies.” Also Doves “Kingdom of Rust.”
12. How do you write your lyrics?
Sporadically. Whenever I’m inspired. Never when I’m not.
13. Best on the road story?
Hmmm…I feel like with our touring years we could have a best of. They all start to blur together really. We have a good time most times.
14. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?
Animal rescue, people rescue, anything where I can get my hands dirty and never worry about straightening my hair. ;)
