One of my most fashionable friends used to say, short hair is iconic. And it seems like it could be true – Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, Clara Bow, etc, all had relatively short hair.

So for those of us in Chictopia-land, I give you our own modern day short hair vixen laurel who is going to give us her tips on how to style short hair.

How to Style Short Hair

Runway show after runway show have we seen girls with long beautiful flawless hair. They can practically do anything with it: braid it over the head, put it into a gorgeous long ponytail, or a perfect side-swept mass of curls on their shoulder. Yes, these girls look great, but yes, long hair is twice as much work to take care of. So for girls with our shorter-dos don’t feel like you can’t do anything with your hair, because we can really do just as much!

I’ve inherited my mom’s curls and thickness. This is an easy advantage and disadvantage at the same time. The summer humidity kills my hair, but in the winter it cooperates perfectly (except in rain and snow). In more humid months, I stay away from stick-straight hair because the time I spend straightening it is lost the second I step out my door. This is why I go for my natural curls. However, I do tame my hair by running a straightener through my air-dried hair, to detain my frizz. Most importantly, the savior to shorter hair: bobby pins, and lots of them!

Here are some easy tips for a casual hairdo to a more fancy way to do up the short hair.

The twist: This is probably the easiest quick-do for hair. Take a small amount of hair from one side, twist it tightly with your finger, and pin back on the backside of your hair. Do the same to the other side (but make sure they’re even.)

For: picnics, going to the movies, grocery shopping

The boho-braid: One of my favorites! Take the same small amount of hair, about the same as the twist, and start to braid it in an upwards direction, instead of the usual downwards. Pin on top of head with a bobby pin. Do the same on the other side. Chances are, you’ll have some hair sticking out in awkward places. Pin those down too.

For: concerts, dinner dates, going out to a bar

The pinned-back Updo: Starting from the back of the head, taking alternating sections of hair and pin it up with a bobby pin. The sections should be around medium size. When you start pinning back the front sections, leave it a little looser to get a more roundhead vintage effect.

For: clubbing, cocktail parties, wine tasting
