I've recently fallen in love with Maxi dresses. I bought my first one after seeing that a maxi dress didn't make my 5'5" mother look short. At 5'7" it made me look tall and elegant(I bought a plain black one to try it out) and boy did I get a lot of looks.

Oh to be tall... If I ever find a maxi dress that actually looks good on me, well, the world will stop. Sweet post, but I can safely say I will more likely than not never be seen in a dress longer than knee length.

I seem to be too tall for most maxi dresses D:~ Is all hope lost for me? I have Annabel's dress, but it looks a bit too short :X

The maxi dress

DiggDigg this
StumbleStumble it!

I know I know, another “oh so trendy” item is making its way into the blogosphere but I swear maxi dresses are where it’s at. They’re easy, comfy, and you don’t have to shave your legs. So maybe you’re not a tall, tan, Brazilian woman or maybe you are, either way with a little bit of digging there’s a maxi dress out there for all kinds of shapes and sizes. I’ve found them to be perfect for bay area weather which can often be a little windy and cold. Maxi dresses keep you cool while keeping your legs relatively warm when you get that unexpected puff of wind. Not to mention you don’t have to worry about your dress flying up and everyone seeing your granny panties because it was laundry day. (Not a true story) Here are few tips to keep in mind while you’re searching for the perfect maxi.

Top Fit
Make sure that the shape of the maxi suits your frame, especially around the bust area. Depending on how busty or (not busty) you are certain shapes are more flattering than others. If you’re like me, and on the flatter side, v-necks are a safe bet. I generally stay away from bandeau like tops because on my frame they make for an unflattering silhouette, though if you have the bust go for it! Also pay attention to how much gathering is going on beneath the bust seam. A little is great for hiding food babies but too much and it’ll look like you have a real baby. Not fun.

Length
Here’s where a few inches can really make the difference between looking chic and looking awkward. Just below the ankle is usually a safe bet so you don’t look like you’re drowning in the dress (especially if you’re petite) and it’ll be long enough that you don’t look like you outgrew it. On a side note, wearing dresses at this length makes them really fun to walk in, I love the feel of the fabric around my ankles!

Print/Colors
I’m not too picky about prints or colors. All I can say is that there are good prints and bad prints, you guys be the judge. However, I will say that anything too loud can be a bit of an eyesore because, remember, you are wearing considerably more fabric than you would with a mini dress. You’ll be wearing a lot of whatever print/ color you choose so be wise!

Here are a few Chictopians that look amazing in their maxi dresses:

Annabel’s dress is so pretty!
Loving the big floral print on leflassh
