Fairly often, I’ll hear someone say “I love (insert gutsy fashion choice here), but I could never pull it off.” That always struck me as a rather strange assertion seeing as most pieces of clothing have the potential to fit seamlessly into any existing wardrobe when manipulated correctly. At my former job, I once had to wear a black and hot pink clad wifebeater with “I <3 (name of store)” emblazoned across the chest. If I could make that look like “me”, then I’m doubtful that I would have much trouble taking on any style challenge.
With that confidence in mind, I set out to find the perfect romper for summer. While I’m always a fan of things I can throw on without much thought, the enigmatic garment that is a romper required a little bit of effort. Here are some style cues to make your experience a little easier:
1. Keep your body shape in mind.
If you’re like me and suffer from Super Extra Long Torso syndrome, consider defining a waistline with a belt. It can help your teeny tiny legs look longer and prevent your romper from looking like a shapeless piece of fabric with leg holes.
2. Layer with basic pieces.
An outfit becomes just a little more interesting when you layer. With such a bold choice as a floral romper, opt for basic pieces rather than that super amazing metallic gold motorcycle jacket you got at Forever last spring. madlove and her friend both opt for denim jackets to complete their looks and are looking mighty fine.
3. Pull colors from your statement piece.
Layers don’t have to be boring. Assuming the romper will be the focal point of your ensemble, choose colors that will compliment it when adding layers. mrs_shankly executes this idea with grace by pulling a cranberry cardigan over a rose printed romper. Even her bow takes color cues from the print. I opted for a black vest, because I’m boring. But my nails are pastel blue! Hey now.
4. Integrate something that is unique to you.
When choosing an item out of your comfort zone, the most important thing to remember is to wear it like it isn’t foreign at all. While I chose a bead embellished vintage vest, gold belt and gladiator sandals, madlove and mrs_shankly both chose pieces that compliment their existing styles. We end up looking like ourselves, even though we are working around the same garment. Perhaps the best way to start pairing other items is to choose pieces in your wardrobe you feel the most at home in, whether it’s your leather boots or denim vest.
When venturing out into the world of Style Choices You Will Regret When You’re Old, remember to make the transition seamlessly by making the garment your own. Looking like yourself is the best form of fashion.
