Sometimes when I feel like I’m not being creative enough, I try to come up with a story or character to use as the basis for an outfit. After re-reading the Lula articles about Edie Beale and crazy stylish old ladies, I had the idea to dress in a similar vein, using a piece of clothing from every decade that an eccentric old lady would have lived in and saved souvenirs from. What I came up with:
1910’s strand of pearls
1920’s flapper dress
1930’s…I don’t really know anything about the 30’s, although I guess the red lipstick is sort of Old Hollywood/screen siren-esque.
1940’s oxford heels (ok so this is a stretch, but bear with me)
1960’s sunglasses (a la Jackie O, of course)
1970’s flower ring
1980’s fake diamond choker (hellooooo Madonna!)
and a big ol’ granny sweater because she’s in her 90’s.
In real life, though, I took off the glasses, the ring is impossible to see, and all the other pieces ended up looking more like a 20’s tribute than anything else.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
