Okay, so maybe my denim top makes me want to break into songs like “one of these things is not like the other…” but it’s the closest I’ll get to finding the perfect denim shirt. It’s a surprisingly tricky task, y’know? With fits and wash having to be just right, and unidentifiable stains to be avoided, finding a great vintage denim shirt is quite the feat.
Thankfully, some Chictopians were up to the task.
c00kiemonster may have a name that conjures up images of fuzzy puppet things downing plates of cookies, but her denim shirt game is totally on point. Her shirt dress and platform combo leaves me envious. Why can’t I find great denim shirt dresses like this?!
If acid wash is a trend you’re willing to brave (as it’s clear that I am), take a few pointers from foureyedfun. Play down the shock with a not-so-basic white tee and some gray skinny jeans. Or, if it suits you, go to the very edge of the style spectrum and throw balance right out the window. Damaged jeans, combat boots, acid wash tee under my acid wash denim shirt? Oh, don’t mind if I do.
presliad makes up for casual chic where I have clearly failed. A black mini capped with white tennis shoes sound exactly like the type of thing I’d wear multiple times a week, forgoing all sorts of societal norms about cleanliness. Some new white Keds are definitely on my short list of items I am in dire need of.
A little bit o’rock, a little bit o’roll, a little bit o’heart shaped sunglasses and you’ve got yourself the style components for a take on the denim shirt a la rahpunen. There’s a bit of a laissez-faire attitude set against the bubble hems and heart-shaped glasses of girlhood. Not to mention, her headscarf makes me want to dust off my scarves and follow suit.
Perusing through these photos has made me ever more determined to find the perfect one for me.
A Few Things to Remember
1. Make sure to find the right fit, otherwise you might look like you are a) drowning or b) trying to pull of your boyfriend’s shirt…and failing. The best point of reference are the shoulder hems, which should hit you exactly at the tips of your shoulders.
2. Vintage women’s denim shirts may fit better than men’s, as they’ll follow the curve of your body, where men’s will be more square.
3. Unidentifiable stains don’t add character. Sorry.
