Whenever I think of “preppy fashion”, I’m always bombarded by mental stock images of sorority girls from teen-themed movies, Cher Horowitz, Burberry campaigns, and my college years (now you know which generation I come from). Those were the days, indeed! I came to live in Manila around mid-2005, armed with my extra-large suitcase filled to the brink with college-appropriate clothes (“my downsized closet”, as my mom would sarcastically refer to it). Some of my memorable pieces consisted of 5 different colors of Lacoste polo shirts that I figured I could rotate every day in college, around 10 different colored plain lycra-infused shirts from Gap and Giordano, a brown Billabong skirt that made me feel So!Cal, a hollister denim skirt (and a slutty Paris-Hilton-inspired holister frilled skirt that for God knows what reason, I owned), a Ksubi (then Tsubi) and American eagle skinny jeans (this was when the skinny jeans trend started), a pair of Diesel denim shorts which I still use to this day, my first designer bag: a Balenciaga Twiggy, my grandma’s hand-me-down Gucci sling, and my trusty Tod’s driver shoes (that everyone in the University would stop and ask about but eventually died a natural death on my junior year from all the rain and flood).
