Dressing up is telling unspoken stories about yourself. That's the beauty of fashion - if it comes naturally to you to mix completely different styles, if you feel like they speak your mind, you will get a wonderful result.
The key is to feel that the styles you are playing with represent you. Even if not completely. If there's anything about yourself that a style expresses, use it. Play with it. For example, you can make an entire outfit telling a certain story and change it through accessories. You get to decide "the volume" of your messages.
You have to be true to and about yourself!
This is a good life advice, but the funny thing is it's also the key in fashion. An outfit gets better as you add pieces of yourself to it. If you only express one aspect about yourself through an outfit, it will probably be boring. If you embody two very different ideas in an outfit, it starts to get interesting. And as you add details about who you are, the story gets more complex and the outfit gets more statement-making.
In the outfit above, the leather ruffles skirt is the main point I am focusing. The high waist and the ruffles are saying feminine and soft and navy leather says sexuality. Leather usually adds a sexual edge, but the colour is very important too. If it was pink for example, the idea would have been completely different.
The white top also has a bit of an edgy vibe for me, due to it's geometrical pattern. White though always says pure and innocent, it's one of the messages I like to play with the most. I can easily create powerful contrasts using it.
The metal chains details have a badass connotation, which I love to see next to feminine and soft or pure and innocent. Or both. Because that's my story.
Find yours and express it!
