This is not a fashionable suggestion, but if you’re going to be carrying a lot of heavy stuff, I recommend getting one that is designed specifically for women, the shoulders and back will be narrower and the straps will not cut across or into your bust. I have this one which is a godsend for occasions when I need to carry my computer and several hardcover texts.

Canvas can be cute, too, and then you don’t have to worry about weather. I’ve had a purple Trans by JanSport canvas backpack since the sixth or seventh grade, now, and it’s still all in one piece, which is impressive in and of itself, as being the geek that I am I seriously abuse my backpacks. But it’s also a pretty attractive, roomy, comfortable bag. JanSport backpacks come in a bunch of colors, too, so you may be able to get something fairly expressive inexpensively.

my sister got a sleek black one at a bookstore of all places, indigo. its really nice, a basic and understated style, made of reinforced nylon or something. maybe big bookstores near you that sell gifts and ‘stuff’ will have the same type of things if you want something nicer or more grown-up than a typical casual backpack.

I think the bag is cool, but not really my style. If you love it, get it. But practically you probably should get a backpack with more sturdy straps :)
