Hair Lightening
So it’s winter and your hair is missing the much needed sunlight to give it that beautiful sun-kissed color, especially if you’re indoors most of the day. No fear! There is a natural way to lighten your hair without using harsh chemicals that will not only give it a beautiful color, but also repair your hair (double whammy!). There are two ways to make this wonderful concoction that use everyday items. Disclaimer: this will not magically lighten hair after one use, but after using this about twice a week for about month, your hair will be noticeably lighter and stronger.
Method #1 Here’s what you’ll need:
• A jar or re-sealable container
• 2 tbsp Olive oil
• 3 tbsp Honey
• Ripe banana (optional)
What to do:
In your jar or container combine about 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 3 tablespoons of honey, and about a quarter of a ripe banana. You can throw it in the blender first so that the ingredients are well blended or mix by hand with a fork. Let the ingredients sit for about 15 minutes before use. I like to just leave it overnight in a cool, dark place to allow the ingredients to fully integrate. Apply this to damp hair and leave for about 30-40 minutes with a shower cap on. Rinse with luke-warm water. Disclaimer: these measurements are eyeballed because the mixture does not have to be exact.
How it works:
Honey has small traces of hydrogen peroxide, which lighten hair overtime. The chemicals in hydrogen peroxide break down color pigments found in hair slowly, thus revealing lighter shades of your natural hair color. This simple mixture will perfectly match your shade of “highlights” using one of God’s best beauty ingredient: honey. The olive oil, also naturally found, contain oils that will give hair moisture and a healthy, beautiful sheen. Lastly, bananas are nature’s conditioner because it contains potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates, and vitamins that improve hair’s elasticity to prevent breakage as well as soften hair. By using a ripe banana, the banana is more potent, so the oils and minerals are going to be more beneficial for your hair.
Method #2 What you’ll need:
• Jar or re-sealable container
• Honey
• Your regular conditioner

What to do:
For this, simply combine one part honey and two parts conditioner inside of your jar. Mix this well and apply to damp hair and let it sit well in your hair for about 30-40 minutes. Put on a shower cap to lock in heat to allow the mixture to really sink in your hair. Rinse with luke-warm water.
How it works:
As stated before, the honey has hydrogen peroxide that lighten your hair, but in this mixture, instead of making your own conditioner with banana, simply use your own to save time.
Method #3 What you’ll need
• Jar or re-sealable container
• Honey
• Regular conditioner
• Ripe banana
• Olive oil
What to do:
Yep, you guessed it! Combine all the two parts conditioner one part honey in your container, as well as 3 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and about one quarter of a ripe banana. Let it sit in the container for about 15-20 minutes before use. Apply to damp hair and put on a shower cap to lock in heat. Let this sit for 30-40 minutes and rise out with luke-warm water.
How it works:
In this mixture, you are basically combining the natural with the modern. You are getting the best of both worlds with this mixture and truly getting the most out of it. This is my favorite way to do it because you get a lot of product in one session. This lasts me about 2-3 weeks, so I don’t have to make it every week.
Quick tips!
• Use raw organic honey because it is not as processed and contains those natural ingredients that give honey its hair lightening qualities. If you don’t have access to this type of honey, at least use grade A honey because this is also less processed than commercialized honey, and thus more beneficial for your hair and your body!
• Extra virgin olive oil is known for being highly condensed in those essential lipids that add shine and strengthen to your hair. This type of olive oil also happens to be the most common!
