As the title suggests, it is about leather trousers with regard to it’s sartorial splendour. Why is it so often considered as having connotations with fetish? Why can’t it be treated as just another material? What makes it stand out (especially for men? Please, no references to the sitcom ’Friends’’, I’d hardly be bothered with some lame show)?

I think leather or PVC or any similar material make trousers are stunning, and yes the ladies can pull it off better, hands down! But even, for them, it raises eyebrows or stares at times from pedestrians, whilst walking down the road. If you happen to be a male, wearing one, you will have that multiplied by a billion more times of sheer uncomfortable gestures or reactions. Why care what people, who do not matter to you think? I can understand perfectly well, that it is not everbody’s cup of tea! However, there are a few who may prefer them, whatever the gender maybe… My question is, how do you view leather trousers in general? On women? On men? Do you own a pair or will you ever consider owning one? Whatever your reply is, please state reasons. Lastly, any ideas if it could ever be accepted as a regular material, like denim for instance? What are your thoughts?

I personally love leather pants on both men and women, I think when work correctly it can be very classy and sexy, and to many it is just another material. Unfortunately, many people wear them in a trashy way, and because fetish wear is often in leather, leather-look, and pvc materials, people tend to give it that connotation, mostly because leather really is a sexy material. It accentuates curves, looks just like skin, except black or whatever color, and in general is very sensual. Also, porn starts and playboy bunnies and other trashy people run around in leather pants trying to be sexy so the media gives leather a bad rap too.

I think it is becoming a more accepted material, though. Not quite like denim because it doesn’t offer the same comfort level, but acceptable. I used to gain stares for my leather pants, and plenty of lewd comments to boot, but now people around me have become used to them, and accept them as part of my wardrobe, not sexy or slutty, but classy with cream sweaters and nude heels.

I do agree with you on most of the things. Most of the time, it is the media that influence how a particular trend is perceived. The buzz that is created by all the hype, which may not always necessarily true…becomes the established take on whatever the topic is!

I’m glad that certain individuals like yourself, are trying to go against the tide and trying to create your own individual take on the issue. Keep it up! I’d wear whatever I fancy, rather than try to please people who I do not even know..

I love leather. But i think like many other daring pieces (for example animal print) it has a fine line between looking chic and looking vulgar.

Couldn’t agree more! It’s all about how you put it altogether. Some people may think it is over the top, if you’re all leathered up from top to bottom. I think it all depends on the compatibility of the items in question.

For instance, I felt quite comfortable putting these together:

…followed by shower of compliments!

Vinyl and leather is often put together under the same category because of the similarity of the smooth feel to it and the shiny texture. They are different, but vinyl can be chic as well. It all depends on how you wear it!

For instance, have you seen this?
