I think their point is the fashion designer job will continue to exist, but the people who are designers now are not going anywhere and will likely continue to dominate the field, making it difficult for rising fashion designers to get a piece of the pie.

However, if you are passionate about fashion, I think you still can make a career there despite this news. You just may want to diversify your skills so you can do other jobs besides fashion design, like costume design for film or theater, styling, fashion merchandising, buying for retail, etc. And of course, even this article’s pessimistic prediction says there will still be 200 new jobs in design— and you never know, one could be you!

My advice is work hard and stay passionate, but make sure you have other skills for a “day job” in case it takes a while to get exactly where you want to be. I don’t know how true it is, but it’s wise to be prepared.
