styling a gunne sax dress

I have this gunne sax dress(really made for a girl), but it is beautiful, not over the top, little house. It is basically denim with dark colored calico at the shoulder area and some antique cotton lace (not overwhelming). It buttons down the front, so it can be worn open. I would like ideas on how to style this without looking like an old hippie or laura engalls, Little House on Praire. I was thinking a vintage nylon slip underneath or two with lace at bodice and bottom, perhaps a belt around the whole thing and boots, tall or short, cowboy or not.

Any suggestions or help?
