i’m having a little moral dilemma—i went antiquing and vintage shopping today and i picked up a mink headband. it’s really beautiful but i feel guilty now that i’m home and uhm, google imaging MINK. and hm , boy are they cute. ugh.
should i feel less guilty that it’s vintage? does anyone buy NEW fur? does anyone exclusively buy pre-owned fur to lessen the guilt?

Personally, I would not feel guilty. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wearing fur or leather. If the animal is not an endangered species, then I feel fine wearing it. I would not feel anymore guilty about wearing a mink headband than wearing a pair of leather boots or a leather jacket. Don’t judge whether or not you should wear an animal on its cuteness. It was more than likely caught in a trap and killed, and mink are not endangered.

I personally would never buy fur, even though it can be really pretty, but I say wear the headband!!! But although I’m not agains vintage fur, I just want to say that it was most definately not caught in a trap…. as that would make the pelt unusable. I will spare you the details of what they do to the mink as it is not nice!!!

By trap, I meant cage-trap. These days, most mink fur is bred. I know how fur is made, I also know how to skin mink, beaver, rabbit, and mole myself.

I’m a vegan, so no, I most definitely would not wear fur. I am, however, on a seemingly endless search for the perfect black faux fur chubby.

If it’s vintage it’s a lot better since more people have gotten more use out of it so then it doesn’t seem as bad.

Well if it’s the idea of wearing an animal on your head that makes you uncomfortable, there’s not much you can do about that. In terms of ethical dilemmas, though, I think that secondhand fur generally isn’t as bad as new fur, because buying it doesn’t create a demand for more fur in the market… in other words buying fur from a thrift or vintage shop won’t cause the owner to say “wow, lots of people are buying fur, I’ll call the fur companies (or whatever) and order lots of fur from them!” as it would in a store that sells new clothing.

I think the only issue I have with fur is the kind of fur that looks so authentic, so it seems like you have an animal dreaped over your shoulder. Fake or real, when the fur fades in that really natural looking way, it kind of creeps me out….

I love fur.
But Rainelyn, why the hell did you google “mink”?
I just did the same thing and now I feel bad… Thanks a lot.

Fur is a commodity. Guilt is a luxury.

I don’t really wear fur, cause it grosses me out to think that it was the skin of an animal, so i usually just wear faux fur, if i must.
But if you’ve already bought it, just wear it.

I don’t think fur would look good on me and if i were to ever get one I’d go faux. I’d rather eat a cow than wear one!! haha…..

I personally do not wear fur and my grandmother has tried to gift me several vintage fur pieces… one of which was the most stunning 60s vintage cream cropped jacket with cropped sleeves with a snow fox color. It was gorgeous, but I’ve always had pets growing up and foxes are like puppies… minks are like ferrets and chinchillas are pets!
I even had a dalmation as a kid… so you know I never admired Cruella Deville.
That said, one of my best friends got a chinchilla stole on sale for something ridiculous like $200 and more power to her. I would never throw red paint on someone or anything!

I wear leather, but I wouldn’t even wear vintage fur. I think because I see fur as just a luxury, whereas leather shoes are good for your feet, and last a lot longer than plastic shoes.
Also, I don’t think there is much of a difference between vintage fur and buying new. Yes, you’re not giving money to the company responsible for making it, but you’re still sending out the message that you support fur wearing. I’d never tell anyone else that they shouldn’t wear fur though, it’s a personal choice.

I agree that it’s a personal choice, I mean I think it’s really wrong but splashing paint on someones expensive clothing like PETA does is un-called for

I don’t really have a problem with fur, unless it’s from an endangered animal.
So I’d say buy it if you like it and think you’ll get wear out of it. At least is someone gets wear out of the item the animal didn’t die needlessly.

i’m having such a huge dilemma over this…
i’m a vegetarian and very against fur, but i’m getting so tempted by the idea of a light brown stole to throw over formal winter dresses or just jeans.
i can picture it. it looks amazinggg. but the only ones i’ve been able to find are new (obviously NOT) or vintage fur online. no faux. =[
if anyone knows any places that sell faux fur that actually looks good, please send a link!
but anyway, i can’t decide how wrong it is to wear vintage fur…

I personally don’t own any fur pieces but i’m planning on getting a coat. I used to hate it but as the faux fur in France looks really cheap and bad manufactured. But we are eating rabbits a lot here and my mum told me that they raised the rabbits and then killed them for their food so they’re not going to throw the fur, they make fur coats.
I think it will make me feel less guilty if it’s rabbit.

I have been thinking about this lately because a vintage store near me has several gorgeous fur pieces, and I can’t decide whether or not to invest in one!
I love animals and have always had pets, but I have just never felt an immense amount of guilt eating meat/wearing leather and I just don’t see furs as that different from leather if the species isn’t endangered. I probably would feel weird about buying a new fur (but I wouldn’t anyway because they’re so expensive!).
I definitely am considering vintage fur, but I’m actually more worried about getting dirty looks from other people! Since some people do feel strongly about fur…

As a vegetarian, I can say no, I would not buy fur. I think it’s more acceptable to buy vintage, but I still wouldn’t do it.

I’ve been debating whether or not to sell fur in my shop, i’ve come across some gorgeous pieces in the warehouse that i think someone out there would love. I myself don’t wear fur, but i do leather, so I don’t really know if i can take a moral stance without being a hypocrite. That being said, I wouldn’t ever buy new fur – just feels wrong on many levels.

Well… some of the leather the jackets are made off comes from the cow. So they don´t kill the cow only to make a jacket.
I think it´s horrible to kill an animal to wear its fur… but it´s your choice.
Personally, I think now they´re gorgeous faux fur pieces with a lovely feel, so you don´t need to buy a real fur one.
Even so, I respect your opinions and I understand people who wear real fur (my mum does).

i own a pair boots made from fur. i still don’t know what animal it was, but it are the best boots i ever possess. Because i hate cold so much! And in the winter, it is soooo cold here. And i never had cold feet with those..
