I have found the ultimate in warmth and chic in one item: Christian Dior's platform booties. Even though they are high They are oh so comfortable and durable! They fit nicely under jeans and look great with dresses/skirts/playsuits. They are pricey but they're made for durability so they'll last ages. Plus they have the added value of being a classic item so though trends come and go these will be a staple of your autumn/winter wardrobe and into spring!
One thing I will say against them though is their lack of grip. The sole is very slick so to protect against slipping on icy roads or slick surfaces score the soles with a knife to add texture.
