How often have we as students asked ourselves why must we take any classes of literature. The question isn’t quite surprising as students today feel that any need of education that they are getting is quite useless and unneeded. Literature contains great historical, intellectual, and societal importance. Reflection of our history literary works is set in different time periods, which often refer to events, acceptances, and understandings of the particular era. Literature preserves the ideals of people and these ideals are love, faith, duty, friendship, freedom, and reference which are all part of the human life that is most worthy of preservation. We can say literature is the expression of life in words of truth and beauty, it is the written record of man’s spirit of his thoughts, emotions, aspirations, and it is the history and only the history of the human soul having characteristics of its artistic quality, its suggestiveness and its permanent qualities which will never fade. Literature inspires people. Think about famous works of art. Many of them are inspired by the Bible or by classic works such as Homer’s Odyssey or Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Films are frequently based on ideas from literature—The Taming of the Shrew inspired the operetta Kiss Me, Kate! as well as the film Ten Things I Hate About You. Numerous allusions to classic literature are found throughout society. Literature evokes the power of the human mind and the imagination. It helps builds good critical thinking skills that are useful in all areas of life. The first step to being successful is to become a good reader. Literature provides us with moral values as it deepens good attitudes inside us. It shows you wrong and right, evil and good and so on. Literature conveys the human experience, all those abstract ideas that we know intuitively, but don’t understand, so we explore them in stories and discuss them with others and exchange ideas until we feel like we’ve gained some kind of understanding. Then we use that understanding to understand other ideas, and so on, until we’ve made the world a better place. Television destroys interest in reading literature, leading to a replacement of knowledge with “facts” Loss of Innocence and Courage I think the point of the subtle commercials is to show how easily the general population is swayed by advertising. The entire story is about the influence of advertising and commercial exploitation can be on the entire population. It’s not just about books- it’s what’s inside books, what you can learn. They symbolize the freedom of expression and speech. As life continues, the use of technology grows and the use of books lessens just like the novel states. Technology has made it easier for people to find information, true or false.(website sparknotes.) This could lead to burning books because they aren’t needed or brainwashing by putting false information in an easy to access place online and disrupt society. In Fahrenheit 451, the only things that people are allowed to read are entertainment texts. The people who lead the society want the people to be happy, but only do what the majority of people want them to do. This leads to the minority that upholds tradition but are discriminated against. The minority usually think about others and not themselves (because of human nature) so they are the ones who truly know what’s better for society. The majority want to rid the society of the minority because the minorities see things differently from them. Some of the majority fears the minority because deep down, they know that the minority could make a better society, but that also means that everyone has to work. People are seeking faster and more accessible ways to information to the point that they don’t even have to do anything (Internet in the world for example); they’re seeking ways to make their lives more comfortable and happy, to increase their welfare; so basically this becomes a society of short-lived enjoyment, of false satisfaction, of “cheap thrills”.
